Clues have been updated 3/29/23.

...of approximately 4,500 we have a lot going on in our small space. We measure about 3 miles from east to west and 4 miles from north to south. Like to golf? We have two golf courses. Like to hike? We have hiking trails. Like to play? We have parks. Like to boat, swim and fish? We have a lake and great fishings spots. Want to pick your own fruit? You can because we have one of the best orchards in the state. You can dine here, why you can even see dinosaur tracks in our little town.

This series for all the little towns in Connecticut who may be small in size but full of all kinds of fun stuff to do.

From Route 66 heading East take a right onto Route 147 and parking for the Mattabesett Trail will be on the right side of the road. From 66 heading West take a left onto 147 and you will see the pull off on the right.

From the parking lot follow the blue blazed trail up the hill. In a fairly short time look on the right side of the trail for the first blue blazed tree. Just past that blue blazed tree about 13 steps up the trail is a two sister on the right side about 15 feet in from the trail. Look on the backside for Peckham Park under a pile of rocks.

Back out on blue, cross a creek bed which is generally dry and up a small rocky hill. Bear right and go downhill and back over the stream bed. Soon you will come to a blue blazed 2 sister shagbark hickory on the right side of the trail. From that tree look to the right for a 3 sister tree. Look behind them for Golfing.

Back out on blue and continue for a bit until you have to walk between a fallen tree that has been cut on the trail. When you walk between the cut ends, look ahead of you and you will see some smooth rock that you will be walking over and at the end of the rock will be a blue blazed 2 sister oak. Stop at the end of the smooth rock, go left off the trail for about 5 steps to a decaying log. Look on the backside under some leaves and a rock. Here you will find Lake Beseck.

Once again, back out on blue and continue up hill, then down a small rock scramble. Still on blue continue for a while, traffic noise from 691 will become louder and when there are no leaves on the trees you will be able to see 691. Keep going up hill and just before you enter the power line clearing watch to your right for a blue blazed tree (swamp maple?). From that tree take a reading of 294 degrees West and walk about 23 steps to a 2 sister tree. Look behind trapdoor for Dinosaur Park.

Continue on blue which will take you out to the power lines. At the Y go up the hill to the left. Go under the power lines and enjoy the view or stop and have lunch. Stay on blue and enter the woods in a southerly direction on blue. Continue on until you come to a small rock ledge on your right. Black Pond will be on the right and in front of you. Go to the back side of the ledge and look under some rocks. Here you will find Black Pond. Please re hide this box well as it is so close to the trail. At this point you can continue on blue to pick up other boxes along the blue blazed trail or you can turn around and finish this series. To continue with these boxes turn around and go back out to the power lines. Take a right onto the power line roadway keeping the woods to your right. As you crest the hill you will see across to another hill where you will see a large open space. That is Coe Hill, one of Middlefield's open spaces. After enjoying that view continue downhill until you come to your first set of three metal power line poles. At that point go left, under the power lines and head for the woods on the other side to a V shaped 2 sister tree with a large decaying log behind her. Look on the end of the fallen tree closest to the 2 sister. The tree will have yellow markings on the side you can't see until you get closer. Look on the backside of the fallen tree under some bark for Lyman Orchards.

Back out onto the power line roadway and head right on the gravel roadway until you meet up with the blue trail again. You will see short metal poles on your right with blues blazes on them. Follow those back into the woods. You will now be back on the blue trail you came up on. Now that you are back on the blue continue until you get to the rock scramble that you came down before, only this time you will go up it. Duh. At the top of the scramble you will see an unmarked path to your right, take it until you see in a very short distance a trail coming up from the right. Across from that trail on the left will be a very low rock ledge. Walk over it and look between the two trees on the other side between two rocks. Here is your final box-Wadsworth State Park.

Now, go back out into the clearing for just a minute and look to your left. Look down the powerlines and up them again until you are looking at the next hill. Do you see the patch of green? Or in winter the last set of powerline poles? That's our backyard! Give us a wave, we are usually out there unless we're out boxing and we'll wave back.

Now back on the unmarked path you came out on and then back to blue and follow blue out to your car. Hope you had a good time!

Hike length: 1-2 miles
