When oil was discovered in Perry County, drillers started putting down wells. The first well in New Straitsville was completed on July Fourth,1909.Soon there were over a hundred oil wells in town. In some instances, wells were drilled so close together that you could step from rig floor to rig floor without stepping on the ground. When the oil boom was over, New Straitsville citizens found another way to feed their families....making moonshine.
When one New Straitsville man was asked by the doctor, "What occupation do you want to put on your new daughter's birth certificate?” the man replied “Bootlegger is good enough for me." Other residents felt the same way. The rural wooded hollows, caves, and abandoned coal mines provided many hiding places for the stills. Creative hiding places were also built into the houses. The State and Federal Liquor Agents tried to stop the traffic in Moonshine but were not successful. The bootleggers were so good at making moonshine, that you could go to a bar in a big city, such as Columbus or even Chicago, and be asked if you wanted the local brand or "Straitsville Special”. When Prohibition ended, moon shining slowed down but it never stopped.

If traveling from the Columbus, Lancaster, or Athens Area:
Take Rt.33 to the st.rt. 93 exit (Logan ). Follow Rt. 93 north for approx. 10 miles. You should be in New Straitsville. Look for the New Straitsville Voluntary Fire Dept. on the right side of the road. Behind that is where the New Straitsville Historic Group and the Hubert Dunkle Hall is located. Park here.
If traveling from the New Lexington area:
Take Rt. 93 south towards Shawnee. Follow Rt. 93 by turning right at the crossroads in Shawnee. Travel 5 to 7 miles to the stop sign at the bottom of the hill and turn right. You should be in New Straitsville. Look for the New Straitsville Voluntary Fire Dept. on the left side of the road. Behind that is where the New Straitsville Historic Group and the Hubert Dunkle Hall is located. Park here.
Clues:
You are at Robinson Cave. This land was purchased in 2000 by the New Straitsville Historic Group as a historic land site.
Cross the crystal clear stream and follow the concrete path up the hill to the hallowed ground. This is where the coal miners would secretly conspire to form their own national labor union.
Next, journey ahead to the mine fires. It is believed that disgruntled miners first met here before soaking loaded coal cars with kerosene and setting them on fire and sending them back into the mines starting the worlds largest underground mine fire.
Standing on the moss covered rock in front of Chris Evans, take a bearing of 240°. Somewhere in that direction is where your treasure awaits.
Take another bearing of 210° and walk 8 paces. Turn 90° to your right. Walk 7 paces. If you are standing half way up the bank side in front of a medium size tree then you have reached your destination. Look under the small rocks at the top side of the tree. Please be sure to recover well.
