Today you’re going somewhere so fascinating you may not want to leave. The Ten Thousand and One Buddha Letterbox is located within The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. It’s a religious and educational community on 488 acres purchased from the state in 1974. The City is open to the public from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm every day. The City requests that no alcoholic beverages, smoking or drugs be consumed on site. They encourage modest dress and respectful behavior. No pets allowed.

The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas uses the old campus of what was first the Mendocino State Asylum for the Insane, established 1889. Later it came to be known as Mendocino State Hospital.

If you care to have lunch there the restaurant is open noon to 3:00 daily except Tuesday. The food is delicious, wholesome and reasonably priced.

To reach the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas drive to the Ukiah area. On the south end of town on Hwy. 101 take the Talmage exit and drive toward Talmage. Keep driving until you see the beautiful gates. Drive in and park as signs direct. Note the neat cork oaks and avoid hitting the numerous peacocks. Walk to the eastern corner of the parking lot. Cross the street joyously heading north toward the very large Buddha visible adorning the Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas. Stop and admire. Continue travelling east. You will pass a couple of large buildings on your right, the second housing the old Asylum crematorium. Note the smoke stacks. Continue on your way turning right with vigor when afforded the opportunity. Note the restaurant you will soon pass on your left. Keep on keeping on making a small jog to pass the old fire station also on your left. Next take the first road to your right going south. It will help you to proper speech. Pass a bit of proper working on your left and continue until you reach Bodhi Way. ***Note that since I hid the box a sign has been erected at this juncture which reads "No Public Access." I don't think anyone will mind if a few quiet people on foot are taking a walk here.*** Make a left and keep on going straight until you reach the edge of the woods. Go into the woods following the small dirt path. Walk until you find an abandoned square cement structure on your left. Walk around it until you are at the northeast corner. There you will see a grate resting on the top of the tank. Push it away from you at least six inches. Look in and down to find a white mesh bag dangling from a strap. Please do not detach the strap, but pull the bag up and unzip to find the letterbox. Thank you for coming, please secure the letterbox lid tightly and leave the letterbox as you found it for the next adventurer.

Six Principles of the Sagely City of Ten Thousand Buddhas:

No fighting.
No greed.
No seeking (A difficult one for letterboxers.).
No being selfish.
No seeking personal advantage.
No lying.
