This hunt is in Lyons Woods Forest Preserve. We had wanted to plant all of this series along the Des Plaines River Trail however, it has been difficult to find enough high and dry places to plant in. We were in this woods recently (on a letterbox hunt for another series) and thought it had great potential so we decided to plant Trip Across America Part 5 here. Park in the parking lot at Blanchard Road and Sheridan Road. Get on the trail there.

Box 1 Georgia
At the Y (or first intersection), go left. At the next intersection, go left again. Right away you will be faced with a choice. Straight is the way to go. Go past the “Trail Ends” sign. Just outside the fence, look for a broken tree on the right. Inside the fallen part of the tree on the fence side, Georgia awaits. This stamp is particularly dear to me so please be discrete when removing it from its hiding spot and hide it well when you finish stamping in.

Box 2 Louisana
Cross the street (North Avenue) and continue on the trail. Turn left when you reach a Y. Pretty soon you will com to a bench on your left. You could rest a bit and view the birds. Then continue walking and look on your left for a big oak with a large knot on it. As you face the tree from the trail, look directly behind it about 15 steps off the trail for a large tree limb on the ground. Look in the end facing the trail for Louisiana. (This guy is ready to party!)

Box 3 Nevada

After you’ve partied with that wild and crazy guy, get back to the trail and continue in the same direction. Follow the trail as it curves and then straightens for a bit. Look for a seating area on your right. (Hmmm…could these large boulders have been placed by ET!) Go to the center of the seating area and take a bearing of 330 degrees for a tree with a hole in its base. That’s where Nevada is hiding.

Box 4 Alaska

Now back on the path once again continue in the same direction. When you come to a triangle, go left. Cross over North Ave. again and go back into the woods. After you walk a ways you might notice a rather large boulder on your right. Continue walking as the trails curves left and then snakes around. When you come to a bench on the right, have a seat. From you seated position, look behind you over your right shoulder. Do you see the large fallen tree? A thin stump is standing right next to it. Look inside the base of the stump for Alaska.

To return to your car, continue on the trail and turn right at the T when you come to it and right again at the Y.
