From I-81/ Exit 245/ Go WEST. Turn RIGHT on US-11/S. MAIN ST. turn LEFT on CANTRELL AVE. Turn RIGHT onto VA-42/S HIGH ST. Turn LEFT onto US-33/W MARKET ST/VA-42. Continue to follow US-33. Turn RIGHT onto WEAVERS RD. Turn RIGHT onto MT. CLINTON PIKE/COOKS CREEK RD. You will end at Cooks Creek Presbyterian Chr: 4222 Mount Clinton Pike, Harrisonburg, VA 22802, US.

You can park in the Church parking lot for access to the site.

Cautions: Watch for traffic along Mt. Clinton Pike rd., watch for holes in grass, don’t touch headstones as of seeing most of them are historical! Please!!!!

Historical facts: The first church at New Erection was built about 1834. The present structure was erected in 1912. Until it burned in 1935, an old school house stood just across the road from the church.

Adult Letterbox Clues:

Start across the road at the new Erection Church stairs. This is directly across from the Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church. Note that this site used to be the old church in 1758 where Reverend Allancer Miller was sent as a pastor. There are 7 trees around this location. Looking from the old site to the new, follow the sidewalk down the steps. Cross the street. Stop parallel to the mailbox at your right. Put your left foot forward and turn 90 degrees to your right. You should be able to see the Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church sign. Following the fence, go half way and turn to your left. Observe the church from this closer view. Turn back to your right and follow the fence the rest of the way until you reach an opening on the left. Follow the path through the gate. Go 8 sidewalk blocks including the 1st. Be sure not to touch any headstones, etc. They were once flooded by Silver Lake. Look to your left, and walk toward the deciduous tree. Notice that the tree has embraced 2 headstones that have been have been there since the time the cemetery was built. Make your way back to where you were originally standing on the sidewalk before turning to the tree. Facing the church walk 180 degrees clockwise around the 1st coniferous tree on your right. Take about 50-55 steps in the direction of the smallest tree. You will see it in the right hand corner of the cemetery, closest to the road. Be sure to notice the memorial under the tree (not the headstone). If you can’t look over and you can’t look under, you have to look around it. Here you’ll find the Cooks Creek letterbox.

Children's Letterbox Clues:

Start across the road at the New Erection Church stairs. There are 7 trees around this location. Go down the steps. Cross to the street (look both ways first!). Stop next to the mailbox at your right. Put your left foot forward, turn right, and you should see the Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church sign. Following the fence, go half way and look to your left and take a look at the new church. Continue following the fence until you find an opening on your left. Follow the path through the gate. Go 7 sidewalk blocks forward (including the 1st one). Take 3 hops forward and turn left. Walk to the tree, and you will see that there are 2 headstones that the tree has grown around. Walk back to the sidewalk and face the church. Pretend that you are the minute hand on a clock. Right now you are at 12:00. Walk clockwise around the pine tree on your right till you reach 12:15. You should see a small tree that looks like a lollipop and walk towards it. Skip counterclockwise around the whole tree once, and take a few steps toward the tree till you’re under the tree branches. Look straight down behind the tree trunk-looking memorial. You will find the Cooks Creek letterbox here.
