Destination: Trissel’s Mennonite Church
Starting Point: Broadway area, Rockingham County, Virginia. From downtown Harrisonburg, Virginia, take Route 42 North (Harpine Highway). Go 9.9 miles and turn left onto Route 809 (Trissels Road). Go 2.1 miles and turn right onto Road 752 (Hisers Lane). Go 8/10th mile and the church is on the right side of the road. The cemetery is behind the church.

Clues(children)
-Start in front of the church on the steps, take 44 steps straight in front of you to a tree(it looks like there is an arrow going through the tree)

-Behind the tree there is a sign. See when Sunday School starts.

-From the sign, walk to a tree that looks like it has a big knot in the side about as tall as you with your hand streched to the sky (about five feet).

-Now when you get there, go to the platform and rest a while.

-While you are resting look up at the graveyard (There is a guy buried here that used to be a local stonecutter. After you find the letterbox, you can search for him and the stones he made for other people in the graveyard, if you are brave enough of course.)

-When looking up at the graveyard, do you see a big tree with a smaller tree no more than four feet away? The big tree looks like it is giving the little tree a hug. When you see it walk to them.

-As you get closer, do you notice something special about the smaller tree? When you find what makes this tree special, look straight down. Dig around and see what you find.

-Put everything back where you found it and if you want now you can look in the graveyard for the famous local stonecutter, Christian Funk and his stones.

The History
-Do you know why the horseshoe is sticking out of the tree? Well when the church was first built there were no cars. People had horses, and during church church goers would tie the horses up by their reins to the tree. The tree had horseshoes on it so they would have something to tie the reins to.

-Trissels Church was a church built by Virginia Mennonites from the area and was rebuilt three different times.

-When German Mennonite families heard of cheap lands in Virginia, they decided to move here.
