Directions from I-81
Coming from the north: Take exit 245 at Harrisonburg and head west on Port Republic Road. Turn left on Route 42 and go 3 miles. Turn right on Eberly Road (Rt.732), then turn left onto College Street. Take the next right onto Bowman Road. Cooks Creek Park will be on your right and there is a small parking area, on the right, down the road.
Coming from the south: Take exit 240 and head west to Bridgewater. Turn right onto Route 42. Take the first left (Eberly Rd./Rt. 732) after the traffic light at Dayton. Turn left onto College Street, and then take the next right onto Bowman Road. There is a small parking area down the road on the left.

Clues:
First, park at Cooks Creek Park. Walk north to the street named because Shenandoah University was once located in Dayton. Turn left on that street; follow the road past “Lahman’s Radiator Shop” and “Silver Lake Welding Service Inc.” Walk toward the mill purchased by R.H. Brown in 1909. Once you have reached the mill, turn left onto the Linhoss Road that leads past the mill. Cross the small bridge that leads to the dam and the mill wheel, then to the left of the bridge, watch for swan sightings.

Adventure Question:
How many gallons of water does the lake’s spring produce everyday?

Continue walking on the road until you pass the dam and turn right, carefully walking up a slight hill. Once at the top of the hill, look across the lake to see Mole Hill, an extinct volcano. Retrace your steps back to Silver Lake Road. Follow the road and continue walking counter-clockwise around the lake. Be sure to look for Silver Lake’s 46-sited species of birds. Once you reach the end of the lake, look for large dirt mounds to your left. On your right pass three trees, as you continue counter-clockwise. When you reach the fourth tree, turn and face the 12-acre lake. Take 13 paces forward to reach a clump of four non-weeping trees. Search for the letterbox beneath leaves and twigs. Be sure to visit the Silver Lake Mill on your return.

Kids Clues
Starting at the stop sign on the edge of the parking lot, take the side road on your left. Stop at the historical marker to find out during what war the mill was burnt down. Hop on one foot across the bridge to the big red wheel. Look for the swans in the creek on the left side of the bridge. Follow the road; pass two trees on your right. Walk up the hill to the dam. Look at the lake. The hill in front of you is called Mole Hill, which is a sleeping volcano. Skip back to the stop sign. Walk past the mill to the lake. Walk along side of the lake to see who can be the first to find out what months people can go fishing. As you keep walking next to the lake, count how many different kinds of ducks you see swimming in the lake. When you reach the end of the lake, pass three dark trees. When you reach the fourth tree, turn to face the 12-acre lake. Take 13 giant steps to a group of four trees. In the middle of the four trees, look under the pile of leaves and sticks. You have found the box!!
