BEHIND THE PRICKLY BUSH (Clues for adults)
From I-81, take Exit 257, Mauzy Exit (If you are traveling NORTH on
I-81, turn left at the top of the exit, go across the Interstate bridge and turn right at the light. If you are traveling SOUTH on I-81, turn right at the top of the exit ramp.) You will now be on Rt. 259. Travel on Rt. 259 north for 4.2 miles to the Broadway city limits. As soon as you enter the town of Broadway, take a left at the stop light onto Springbrook Road. Stay on Springbrook Road and turn right at the next stoplight onto Main Street. Stay on Main Street until you see BB&T bank and turn right on the roads either side of the bank and park at Whitmore’s Grocery parking lot.(Across from the actual store and behind the bank.)
Start walking south on Central Street. Keep walking past the Fire Department. When you get to the end of the street, cross it and start walking toward the Broadway Town Office.(The Town Office is the site of the first high school building.) Walk past the Veteran’s Memorial stone beside the town office. There should be a dentist office to your right. Go to the corner of Main Street and Broadway Avenue and go left down the sidewalk. Walk until you get to the white arch across from Old Dominion Reality. Walk through the white arch and follow the pathway to the J. Frank Hillyard memorial stone. Go to the left and walk toward the gazebo and the letterbox will be near the third coniferous bush in the row you’re walking along.(The ‘gazebo’ is the belfry off of the top of the Poultry Specialties Inc. Poultry Specialties was one of the buildings of the old high school .There’s still an original basketball net and gym floor on the second floor of the Poultry building. The rusty water fountain in the middle of the gazebo is the water fountain from the school.)

(Clues for children)
Park at Whitmore’s Grocery (1 block east of Main St.)

Start walking south on Central St.

You should pass Broadway Volunteer Fire Dept.

Cross the street and start walking up Central St.

In just a few seconds, you will be coming up on the Village Library (it is to your left)
Please go inside the Village Library and look around for approximately 2-3 minutes.
Go back to the back left corner and you’ll see a Children’s Storybook area. (Please take 5 minutes to rest up those little legs…. Let me know when you’re ready!)

Okay, now that you’re ready, let’s get back outside!

Go right to the corner of Central St. and Broadway Avenue. Cross to the left (DON’T forget to look both ways.)

At the corner of Main St. and Broadway Avenue, turn left and pass the green J. Frank Hillyard Memorial Park sign, then after a little you will pass a white arch and at the end of the sidewalk you’ll see a brick building named Poultry Specialties. It will have a few chickens in the top left corner of the sign.
(This was the first Broadway High School gym and Cafeteria.)
Ask to see the old gym up stairs, and if he is in, ask for Wesley.
When you are upstairs notice how old the basketball net is and listen closely to the floor when you step in certain spots. Behind the basketball net there is the first high school stage.

When you are finished, please come back out the front doors and face to your right.

Count 29 cement squares until you come the white arch. Line up and walk through in a single file line.

Come up the sidewalk to a light on your left side under a tree. Stop!

Take 10 “giant” steps and look to your right and see the Hillyard plaque. Notice that he is who the middle school was named after.
Turn to your left and count over three bushes. (These bushes should be by the gazebo so that you know they’re the right trees your counting.)

Look toward the water fountain inside the gazebo, and look around the three bushes you used to count over.

Congratulations!!!
