THE SPRINGHOUSE

Adult clues

Directions: Take interstate 81/James Madison University/Exit 245. Go East to US-11/S MAIN ST toward CANTRELL AVE. Turn LEFT onto CANTRELL AVE. (0.2 miles.) Turn RIGHT onto VA-42/S HIGH ST. (0.4 miles.) Turn left ontoUS-33/W MARKET ST/VA-42 Continue to follow US-33. (10.1 miles.) Turn left off 33 West onto Rawley Springs Road. You will come to a fork in the road where you will need to keep going straight up the steep hill. Once you come to the top of the hill. Shift right and continue your drive on Rawley Springs Road. Travel down it until you reach the black bridge. When you reach this, you will park on the left side of the road across from the bridge.

1. Before you start your adventure, stop for a couple minutes and take in the sights and sounds that Dry River offers you. (It is best known for fishing.)

2.Turn your back to the bridge, and go left up Rawley Springs Rd. Take note of the humongous rocks coated with a light green moss to your right.

3. When you reach the yield sign, take 60 to 65 steps until you get to the dirt path with three big rocks sitting at the top.

4. Turn ¼ to your right, and walk up the path until you get to where the pavement starts.

5. You will see a row of mailboxes in front of you on the right. Start walking towards them and stop when you reach the mailbox with three stars.

6. Now that you have found the mailbox, turn 90 degrees to the left, and walk over the hill to the back of the Springhouse. (Be careful when walking down the backside of the Springhouse, it could possibly be slick when wet)

7. Position your body so you are facing the fountain with water running out. (The water that is coming out of the fountain is known as medicinal water. (Man used this water for washing, cleansing, easing aches and pains, and for ritual purposes.)

10. Now have the person over by the right hand corner look up into the roof and you have found the box.

Here are two quick little facts: The Springhouse is one of the many features of Rawley Springs. The Springhouse is the last historical landmark standing due to burning and tearing down of the three hotels and the bandstand.

The Springhouse was built sometime after 1915.
