CLUES FOR ADULTS

To get to your starting location merge onto US-33 W/ E. Market ST via exit 247B toward Harrisonburg. Turn right onto US-11 N/US-33 W. Turn left onto Court Square. Turn left onto US-33 W/ Court Square. Turn right onto US-33/ W Market St. / VA-42. Turn right onto VA-42/ N High St. continue to follow VA-42. Turn left onto Mt. Clinton Pike. End at 3848 Mount Clinton Pike Harrisonburg, VA 22802- 0703, US.

To begin your letterboxing adventure drive to the address of 3484 Mt. Clinton Pike.

From there you will see a long gravel driveway leading back to two old white houses.

Follow the driveway past 5 telephone poles that are on your left hand side and the white fence on the right.

When you arrive at the 5th pole you will be looking at the original Suter home place which was built from native pine heart lumber in 1764.

From there follow the driveway around to the old barn that is to the right of two tall trees and a large field.

Behind the barn in the field is where the pottery shop once stood. Emanuel the owner of the business often made more then 100 pots in a days time with his younger brother Jacohe. An estimated two to four thousand pottery pieces came from this kiln every year.

From the light pole at the barn walk approximately 20 steps towards the large pine tree on the hill in the distance. When you reach your destination you will find old broken pieces of pottery that where once plates, crocks, and table ware.

To make the pottery they used clay from a clay bank near Timberville. Then they used plug mills to grind the clay into fine particles so they could form clay balls to make dishes.

When you’re done looking for pottery pieces go to a small building made of stone that is beside you.

As you approach the front door you may see bird nests along the wooden rafters.

Go inside the building and look for something interesting and dark. If you find the place make sure you reach in the right direction if you do you will place your hand on the pottery letterbox.

Once you get there you will see a long gravel driveway that disappears behind two old white houses.

Walk down the driveway past the 5 tall telephone poles on your left and the short white fence on the right.

When you get to the 5th pole you will be standing in front of the original home that was built over 200 years ago from pine heart lumber.

From there, follow the driveway around to the old barn that is at the end of the driveway beside the two tall trees.

Behind the barn in the field was where the pottery shop once stood. The owner, Emanuel, often made more then 100 pots in a day’s time with his younger brother Jacob. They believe that the brothers made between 2 and 4 thousand pieces of pottery every year.

From the tall telephone pole at the end of the barn, take 20 Giant steps towards the large pine tree on the hill in the distance. When you reach the pottery pit you will find old pieces of plates, crocks, and tableware. Feel free to take a piece with you if you want.

To make their pottery they used clay from the North Fork River in Timberville. Then they used “plug mills” to grind the clay into fine particles so they could make dishes.

When you’re done looking for the pieces of pottery, go to a small building made of stone that is right beside you.

As you approach the front door of the stone building you might see bird nests in the rafters near the ceiling.

Go inside the building and look for a very small hole near the ground. Don’t be afraid, just reach in and the box is just to the right behind the cinder block.
