LINCOLN LANDING

Traveling north on Interstate 81 get off at exit 257-Muazy/Broadway. Turn left and at the stoplight turn right. If you are traveling south on Interstate 81 get off at exit 257-Muazy/ Broadway and turn right. Turn on Route 259 West and go until you come to a stoplight making a left at the stoplight and go down past Broadway High School. At the stoplight make a left on to Route 42 South. Go up Route 42 about 4 to 5 miles and then you should come up to a yellowish looking-house on the left hand side of the road. Then you should cross the median strip and pull up to the house with the historical marker in front. Park there in front of the historical marker. Read the historical marker.

ADULT DIRECTIONS

The historical marker explains that the Lincoln homestead is famous because most of the Lincoln family lived in this house. The Lincoln homestead is one of the many places where Abraham spent most of his life, farming and planting crops when he was a child.

From my opinion it is a great house. The owners are trying to get the Lincoln Society of Virginia buy the house. It is very old and the floors are really bad and the ceilings are coming down.

At the Lincoln homestead there are a few slaves that are buried in the family cemetery. The slaves meant just as much to the Lincoln family as if they were family themselves.

After you read the historical marker, start walking up the old Rt. 42 road. Walk up the old road until you see a bank (you’ll see it if you’re not wrong then you’ll be looking in this direction.) Then walk up the hill to the black picket cemetery. Study the tombstones then go back down the same way you came. Walk back down and stand in front of the historical marker and then take about 18 steps backwards. You’ll see a tree and behind the tree will be a bush. Lift the bush’s branches up and you will find the box.

CHILDRENS DIRECTIONS

You have reached one of the homes of Abraham Lincoln. When you get out of your car, read the historical marker. This explains that the Lincoln Homestead is famous because most of the Lincoln family once lived in this house.

1. Then skip up the old Rt. 42 road until you come to a tree that has funny-looking roots.

2. Follow the way up the hill and walk to the cemetery. When you reach the cemetery jog around it twice, then walk around it once. There are a couple of slave family members and five generations of Lincolns buried there.

3. After you get your exercise and say “Hi” to Uncle Jacob, walk back down the same way you came. Walk back to the historical marker and STOP.

4. Take about 18 steps backwards and you will see a tree stump where a tree used to be.

5. Cross the river of rocks, but watch if they are wet, they will be slippery.

6. After you cross the river of rocks behind what's left of the tree there will be a bush that has one branch on the ground, lift up the branch and you will find the letterbox. 7. Be sure that you cover the box back up after you are finished. Afterwards, you can also walk inside the house, but be careful because it is a very old house and the floors are weak. They are trying to sell it to the Lincoln society.
