Eagle's Nest Letterbox

The Eagle's Nest letterbox is located on the side of Eagle Mountain. There aren't many mountains on the edge of Lake Champlain, but Eagle Mountain is an exception (but trust me, it is no Everest...). Not a bad walk for young children, just be careful when you reach the cliffs at the end of the trail. The drive takes you well off the beaten path, but it is worth it.

Getting there: Take I-89 to Exit 17. Go west on Route 2 for 2.4 miles. Turn right onto Bear Trap Rd. After 1.8 miles, the road forks. You will see a large dead tree on the left. Bear left toward barn. It almost looks like you are driving into the farm. At the stop sign, turn left onto Cadreact Rd. It becomes a dirt road. Follow approximately 2.5 miles. The road becomes Beebee Road. Turn left onto Cold Spring Rd. Follow Cold Spring one-tenth of a mile to the parking area on the right. This road is private, please do not go further than the Natural Area. There is a clear, marked trailhead with a sign. Parking on the side of the road.

Once at the mountain, you will follow the #1 trail for the entire walk. The trail forks early on your walk. Bear left. After walking uphill a ways, the trail levels and there is an intersection to go straight or turn right. Go straight. (If you would like to walk to the top of Eagle Mountain, you can turn right, but away from the box.) Follow this trail to the end at Hoyt Lookout. Please enjoy the incredible views from the top of a cliff on the edge of Lake Champlain. Be very careful, especially with young children.

After enjoying the views, turn around 180 degrees and look a little to the right. At about 20 paces there is a tree that forks into about 5-6 different trunks. Go to the tree and turn left. At about 5 paces there is a rock that has a crevice filled with leaves. It is there where you will find the box. If you get to the falled tree, you have gone too far. ENJOY!!!
