This is Pownal's first letterbox!

Note that though the box is in Pownal, VT, you can only access it from a road in Williamstown, MA. It is a kid-friendly short hike on well-maintained trails.

Parking Directions (from TTOR's website):

"Pownal, VT parking area: From the intersection of Rts. 2 and 7 in Williamstown, follow Rt. 7 north 1.7 mi., turn right onto Sand Spring Rd., then bear right onto Bridges Rd. Follow for 0.3 mi., turn left onto White Oaks Rd., and follow for 1.1 mi. when road becomes dirt. Continue for 0.4 mi., bear left at fork onto Benedict Rd., and continue 0.1 mi. to entrance and parking (8 cars) on left."

There is also a parking area in Williamstown but the hike is much longer and steeper from there.

There are maps and brochures available in the small kiosk at the parking area.

From the Vermont parking area , with your back to the road where you came from, you will see two trails. Take the trail on the left side and continue walking until you see a green sign pointing to the right "Benedict Road". You will not follow this sign and turn left instead. Follow the trail until you see the old gravel pit in front of you. There will be three directional green signs on your left. Face the green sign pointing to the right "Kalarama trail". Behind this sign is a big mound of rocky sandy soil. Find the highest point on this mound with a cluster of young trees. At the base of these trees lies the letterbox hidden under a pile of light-colored rocks. It is a clear plastic rectangular container. Please hide it well before you leave since the box is quite visible from the trail without the rocks concealing it.

For the geocachers out there: I also hid a small geocache in this area less than a mile away from the letterbox.

LAST VERIFIED: June 17, 2014 - I had to replace the container since the original container was inhabited by a gazillion ants. I already updated the description above.
