Spree For All –Spring Hiking Event
Horseshoe Pond
May 1 – June 30, 2007
Complete this award-winning hiking series by searching for letterboxes from Travel’n Turtle and Wee Walkers. Complete at least five hikes – on five different trails, the same trail or any combination of trails – to receive hiking rewards. Hikes must be completed May 1 through June 30. Hiking forms available at F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm (Cherry Lane box), the park district’s administrative offices (975 Treaty Line Road, Akron), all Acme Fresh Market locations and by calling 1-800-23-SUMMA, or download one at: http://summitmetroparks.org/programs/spree.shtml
Horseshoe Pond is located a few miles south east of the 271/ RT 303 exit. Check your maps before heading out.
After exiting you car head down the gravel path to the wooden lookout you will be making a left at the pond. We spotted a few turtles sunning themselves on a log.
Pass over another wooden platform and onto the wooden bridge through the pine forest. At the end of the bridge check out the huge pine tree near the lakes edge. The "wee's" loved a Kodak moment perched in the branches!
Now turn around and go back over the brodge. Stop where the bridge bends (1/2 way). Look out into the pines, if you're in the right spot you should be looking through two pines of equal size. Walk straight out throught these two pines and continue walking as straight as you can for about 85 single footfalls. You should be near the end of the pines now and in front of 3 rougher barked trees in a row. To the right is a downed tree and a short stump. It is in this downed tree you will find a buck settled down to rest.
