Whitewater Canal Trail

METAMORA TRAIL HEAD

This portion of the trail is scheduled to be paved during the summer of 2007, it is part of the Rails to Trails national project – if you don’t know about this wonderful undertaking, you can Google Rails to Trails, Whitewater Canal Trail, Monon Trail, or Cardinal Greenway. This is a grassroots movement that is always looking for contributions for development and maintenance and volunteers. These trails are for walking, bicycles, and are handicap accessible. This portion of the trail follows the old canal route that was part of the Erie Canal System that went from Cincinnati to Hagerstown, Indiana.

You can park in the lot by the Duck Creek Aqueduct on the east end of Metamora. The big Belgian horses pull an authentic riverboat along the canal and through the covered bridge; yes, a covered bridge for a boat.

Head up the trail and you’ll come to another gate past a bright red barn. There is a drive through gate and a walk through gate. A very short stretch of wooden fence defines the boundary on the south side of the gate and at the base of the post are a couple of strategically placed rocks – look under the rocks to find the Whitewater Canal Trail logo box.

GOT BAND-AIDS?

A little further down the trail you’ll come to a lock in the canal. Keep your eyes on the young’uns because you can walk right up to the canal edge and look at these working marvels of engineering. You’ll also need to cross the RR tracks so watch out for the Whitewater Valley Railroad that uses these tracks. Hopefully you don’t have any blisters from walking such a short distance along the trail, but if you do, there are some bandages close by. On the downstream side of the lock on the railroad track side, you can sit on a short cement wall that is perpendicular to the canal. At the corner where it meets the side of the lock wall there is a ledge with a little hole under it, but how would you know that because there are some rocks stacked up right there hiding the Band-Aids.

This lock is right across the road from the Hearthstone Restaurant and it is possible that Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman stood in this very spot—but that’s another story.
