THIS BOX IS MISSING! SO SORRY FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ATTMEPTED THIS LESS-THAN-EASY BOX:(
I PROBABLY WON'T REPLACE IT BECAUSE OF THE TRICKY LOCATION (AND MY LIVING ON THE EAST COAST NOW)...

I'VE BEEN TOLD THIS BOX MAY BE MISSING! I'M PLANNING TO REPLANT IT, BUT MAY NOT GET A CHANCE FOR A FEW WEEKS. (posted 11/28/07)

Community Gardens are some of my favorite places on earth- community, nature, life, growth… Delightful!

The Southside Community Garden is located at the corner of 5th and W Streets near Southside Park in downtown Sacramento, Southside Community Garden was opened by the City of Sacramento in January of 2004, in part to replace the Ron Mandela Community Garden (that was located at Q & 15th). The Mandela Garden became the site of protest in 2003 after the state decided not to renew the lease on the 30-year-old garden and the site was slated for development. This decision created quite an uproar in the community and in the end the police arrested garden members who had chained themselves together under an apricot tree in the garden in attempt to save their plots and the development went forward (one of the other replacement gardens is a much smaller corner of that original site).

When the Southside site was originally identified, it was too toxic for a garden- 24 inches of soil had to remove from the whole site and replace with clean soil. Now gardeners enjoy 32,000 square feet of completely organic gardening, divided into 10x10 plots and a kid’s garden area.

Clues:
From the entrance gate on 5th Street (there's one on 4th Street as well), take 9 paces down the main path (you’ll be headed west). From there turn to the north and take 15 paces down this smaller path. From where you stop, you should be able to view Plot 3’s flowers and veggies (when I planted this box, they had marigolds growing out of a pair of old boots at the corner of their plot). After admiring this gardeners work, turn to the west again and travel 9 paces. Now you will have an up-close view of the Southside Community Garden mural. Straight down from the “G” grows a small aloe vera. If you kneel down to look more closely at this lovely succulent, you’ll find your prize under this container tucked behind a small chunk of cement!

**IMPORTANT: This community garden is city-run and is locked when gardeners aren't at work- visitors are welcome, but only when gardeners are around. At this time of year (summer), it shouldn't be a problem as gardeners seem to be plentiful (and the fence is hop-able for the rather spry), but I'll change the location to accommodate the slower gardening seasons soon.
You’ll have to be VERY discreet at this location. Watchful gardeners may not like you snooping around their ripe tomatoes, peppers, raspberries and more!
