The Hole in the Wall Buddha is located within The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. It’s a religious and educational community on 488 acres purchased from the state in 1974. The City is open to the public from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm every day. The City requests that no alcoholic beverages, smoking or drugs be consumed on site. They encourage modest dress and respectful behavior. No pets allowed.

For more information on this fascinating site please visit the Ten Thousand and One Buddha letterbox page.

To reach the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas drive to the Ukiah area. On the south end of town on Hwy. 101 take the Talmage exit and drive toward Talmage. Keep driving until you see the beautiful gates. Drive in and park as signs direct.

After you park look in the vicinity for an option of joyous or Bodhi. Choose Bodhi and walk the Bodhi way in the direction away from which you entered the City. Pass the Instilling Goodness Elementary Girls’ School on your right. Don’t be tempted by signs indicating the way to the vegetarian restaurant. You are on a mission and might go back later. Soon you will have to make a decision whether to proceed on your current way or to choose proper speech. Take proper speech.

Talk is cheap. After awhile and when you get the opportunity take proper work. Sweatier perhaps, but often more productive. And really, it’s doubtful you have attained wisdom yet, so keep on properly working. After awhile more you will find yourself confronted with virtue. Go ahead, forget the whole work thing and let yourself choose virtue. Walk straight and do not turn even though the path of virtue mysteriously becomes vigor.

The path to enlightenment is not easily understood. When you see a choice giving way to proper view, take a right to proper view. Aptly named, a proper view will after a brief time afford you a glance at the old brick Mason Shop, partly obscured by trees on your right. On the dirt road walk around to the back and face the building. Go to the building’s corner on the left. About four feet along the side from the corner and about two feet up you will spy a hole in the wall. Reach in with your left hand to the left. Behind a small rock you will find a camo-covered plastic container. Welcome to the Hole in the Wall Buddha!
