One old moose, who resided in the East Texas Piney Woods, heard on the Internet about a gathering of his kind, way up north at a place called Grapevine. He got very excited, because, after all, very few meese resided in Texas, so he determined to find his way north and visit his kinfolk on the lake. He didn’t have a calendar, but it was spring and he was sure they would all still be there, just waiting for him to drop by, so he printed out the invitation, found his Texas map and headed for the shores of Lake Grapevine. It was a long trip and he was surprised by all the traffic on the road and the big planes flying overhead, but he persevered and finally arrived at his destination. When he started reading the directions he became confused, as they were very cryptic, and talked about a lot of different parks, so he went into town to find a map. Some people in town didn’t even know there was a lake nearby, which was surprising to the moose, but he finally found a map and started to study it. He discovered that he had gone way too far north. According to the way he was reading the map, Lake Grapevine was way southwest of Dallas, and he seemed to be on the northwest side. So, trusting his navigational skills, he walked and walked and finally found another lake which he thought must be Lake Grapevine. He saw some guy’s name on a sign, Joe Pool, it said, but there was no way to call Mr. Pool since he didn’t have a cell phone with him. Convinced this was the right place, he wandered through the cedar forest and over the hills until he found a lookout over the lake. Thinking he must be early for the gathering, he found a place to rest while he waited for the other meese to come to him. He went to sleep without realizing his terrible mistake: he had been reading the map upside down!
This letterbox is located at Cedar Hill State Park. This Park's proximity to Dallas makes it an ideal destination for families who want to enjoy the great outdoors without spending precious time driving, and you just might be able to see the moose sticking his head out from his hiding place from the overlook.
Directions:
Cedar Hill SP is located 10 miles southwest of Dallas. From Interstate 20 exit FM 1382 and go 4 miles south to the entrance on the right. If you’re coming on Hwy. 67 from the city of Cedar Hill, turn west onto FM 1382 and follow the signs to the park entrance on your left. After paying and getting a map at the entrance station, turn left at the first road jct. Go past the Penn Farm, a Stop Sign and the Hog Wallow Campground to the Coyote Campground on the right (sites >= 281). Turn right and go to the restroom building on the left and park.
Clues:
Walk across the street to the Overlook Trailhead. At the first trail jct., turn left and continue all the way to the overlook with a fence and bench. Enjoy the view, then when ready to find the box, look straight ahead and find the 4 foot stump about 30 feet in front of you. The moose is resting in the hollow of the stump under a white rock. Please re-cover well.
