Smith’s Castle Microbox

***On August 31, 2008 I replaced the log book, it was completely wet. I found the box hanging from the lowest branch in the tree, at eye level, where anyone could notice it. Please be sure to put it up a bit higher so only someone looking for it will see it. Thanks. ***

This is a drive-by microbox but also a wonderful site to explore. Enjoy the grounds and the history and have a picnic! Perfect for families. Be sure to bring your own pen and stamp pad since this is s microbox. Please contact us if you have any questions and to let us know the condition of the box! Thanks! rifamily@cox.net

Smith’s Castle is the site of a 1678 historic building located on a cove on Narragansett Bay.

Location:
Smith’s Castle is located on Post Road, Route 1 in North Kingstown. The entrance is directly across the street from the Rhode Island State Police Barracks. Check the Castle’s website for a map. http://www.smithscastle.org/

Clues:
Turn off Post Road onto Richard Smith Drive and drive to the parking lot. You will be looking at the back of the house, the front door faces the grounds and cove.
Start your walk down the path from the parking lot.

On your right is the house, on your left will be a large, beautiful Sycamore tree (it has a plaque on it that says "Sycamore"). To the left of that tree is a cedar tree, standing alone. If you stand facing the cedar tree, with the Sycamore slightly behind you to your right, the microbox will be on the BACKside of the cedar tree, hanging in the lower branches. Simply unhook the microbox and then you can sit on one of the many rocks to stamp your logbook and the microbook. After stamping, please take care to fit everything back into the microbox (it’s a tight squeeze!) and replace the box in the tree.

After carefully replacing the microbox, please continue exploring the beautiful property.

Walking from the tree towards the cove, you will encounter a field of rocks in which is a sundial. From the sundial move in a northerly direction. Find the memorial of the Forty Men on the north side of the grounds. Continue exploring down the lawn towards Mill Cove. Visit the 18th Century Garden (there is a gate near the house by which you can enter). If the Castle is closed, enjoy the architecture from the exterior. Or, if open, take a tour!

Smith’s Castle Historic House Museum:

Smith’s Castle is an individually listed National Register Historic Building and National Landmark Archaeological Site. The site of trading posts established ca 1638 by Rhode Island founder, Roger Williams and Richard Smith, who is believed to have built the first permanent house on the site in the 17th century, literally giving birth to the town of North Kingstown. An important site in King Philip’s War, during which time the house was destroyed by fire and then rebuilt to become one of the two largest South County slave-holding plantations in the 18th century, with land holdings of 3,000 acres. The Castle is a meticulously restored building, which exhibits 17th and 18th century architecture, furnishings and décor.
