The Lost River Cave and Valley is an urban Nature Sanctuary. Sixty-eight acres of green space include a diversity of wildlife habitat including river, wetlands, blue holes, limestone bluffs, grassland prairie, cedar glade, springs, and hardwood forest. The valley boasts over 130 species of birds during spring migration and an abundance of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. This web of life extends into the cave, where countless critters live quietly in the darkness. This is the only underground boat tour in the state. This is a very unique and special treasure.

Take I-65 to Exit Number 20. This is the Natcher Parkway (it begins at this point). Take the 1st Exit (Number 4). Turn right onto 31-W. Go 1.1 miles and Lost River Cave and Valley will be on your right.

This is the 2nd in the Cave Critter series of 3 stamps.

Begin the search for Cavemander at Blue Hole #3 - hopefully after you've found the Blind Blue Boil stamp. Proceed on the trail. You will soon see a place where you can rest on your left. Then go past the "canine with flowers. Keep walking "in honor of the paratrooper". Ladies, don't stop on the right to powder your noses because it explodes. You could stop to rest and eat with the birds, but proceed on for "a cup of coffee". Go to the blue hole #2. See the big hole into the cave? Don't worry, this letterbox is not that extreme. Instead, look to the left at the big maple on the hill with big roots. Look at the base of the tree. There's a small hole/cave. The Cavemander hides within.

More information on Lost River Cave and Valley can be found at www.lostrivercave.com. We recommend the boat tour. But you can walk the trails without a cave tour for $5.
