****** August 30, 2019 Update: Both boxes UNAVAILABLE ********
(Jar Jar & Anakin are on vacation)

Lake Elkhorn has a paved 2 mile path around the lake. The path is easy, with slight hills. Excellent fun for fishing, biking, kite flying, picnicking, jogging, and walking (pets are welcome-maybe not alligators!). No restroom facilities, but from the playground-across Cradlerock Way, is a McDonald’s (please don’t let children go alone!!)

Directions: To Lake Elkhorn: From I-95, take Rt 32 West exit, take exit 14 Broken Land Parkway-North, after 1st light (Snowden River Pkwy) there is a parking lot on the right; To Playground Parking Lot: at 2d light Cradlerock Way turn Right, take the 2d right Dockside Lane, take 1st immediate Left unmarked road into parking lot. If needed more parking at Lake View Parking Lot: From Dockside Lane,
Left on Cradlerock Way, Left at light/Broken Land Parkway,
Right into Lake View Parking Lot. Take trail back to Lake Elkhorn.

The letterboxes start at the playground parking lot; however, any entry path will work-just stay right-as the path will loop back! Poison ivy & Ticks are a part of the natural environment in Maryland woodlands, so the Professor suggests long pants or socks for the box retriever & for everyone to check each other for ticks. These paths are very popular so be stealthy in your actions!

Box #1 Anakin
Professor Pfft was so excited today, as he loves the outdoor classroom, no matter what planet he is on.
“YES! Today is a Field Day of Study on the Planet Earth.. This lesson is at Lake Elkhorn, which is located in the suburb of Columbia, in the state of Maryland, in the country of the United States of America, on the continent of North America, Planet Earth, in the Planetary System of Sol. . . " and on and on he went. "Ok students, complete your assignment using the worksheet provided & you may work in pairs. You will notice humans & their pets, walking the perimeter of the lake. Remember to engage your cloaking devices to keep the pets calm. The humans may seem like they are talking to themselves, but they are not, they are actually communicating to other humans. When you are done meet back here at the playground parking lot."

Anakin & Jar Jar were also excited, ‘tween the two only Jar Jar had the worksheet & no one had a compass! Which way to go…north or south…or righty tighty lefty loosey. They agreed on righty tighty. So off they went, Jar Jar wants to jump in the water with the ducks…turns out they are empty droids. Come-on JJ & down the path they go, skipping around the humans & dogs. Watch out—there’s a patch of green DDD ahead. Darn those ducks! Oh cool, there’s an elevated
landing pad by the water steps. They both hop up there & pretend to land their shuttles & then Anakin announces Last one to the bridge is a…zoom-zoom-zoom-off they go, weaving around the strollers & joggers. Look! Look! Look! in the water there’s a turtle. They watch the turtles swim about, wondering what the turtles are learning today. Are we on the right path…Jar Jar checks, ummm, the map says to stay on the path around the lake, passing the red top pavilion and some brown and white building. Cool, there are some docks over the water. Wonder what kind of fish we'll see.

Around they go..forgetting all about the flora and the fishes when they witness the World fitness trail. Whoa! a World Fitness Trail! We gotta ask Professor Pfft if there's one of these trails back home. So they touch toes, lift knees & legs, jump, stretch, & even pretend to be monkeys hanging & swinging on the bars. They’re hanging & swinging & whoopin' & hollerin' right into a frenzy just as Professor Pfft saunters by, “Having fun are we?” They fumble & stammer “uh, uh, we’re on ..mumble-mumble..lookin fur…” “Good. Continue your assignment,” he said.

Anakin & Jar Jar take out their paper (after a lot of whew! Pfft! Whew!) and find where they are. Ok, here it is, --Remember it is important to balance work with play. Now get back to work (hey! how did he know!)& continue down the path, crossing 2 wooden bridges & 2 benches. Look for the spot on the path that has a rock bed on each side of the trail, this allows the small stream to go under the pathway & to the lake. From this spot look up the trail as it curves there are 2 trees on the left. From the 2d (larger) tree start looking on the right in the woods for 2 boulders. The boulders can be seen from the path. Find the triangle boulder, face the Lake & look for the (large low) sitting rock. Go to the sitting rock & rest your feet. Anakin will be hiding under the rock by your feet. Anakin & JarJar take out their notebooks and markers & document their find.

Box # 2 Jar Jar
Ok, let’s hurry up & finish so we can play. Ok, the paper says to get rock samples- we did, and to keep count of the turtles you see, opps-can you remember I think we saw 5-yea we did, and to collect different leaves we see on the ground. Boy, the Professor sure does want us to look at alotta stuff.

So off they scoot again dodging humans and playing with the dogs. Anakin picks up a stick & throws it. The dog takes off into the woods & the human starts to yell “Skipper come here, come here. Get back here.” Skipper returns with a stick in his mouth & his head turned sideways. (Anakin says good boy! & the dog smiles) “Oh, you want to play games Skipper, ok, Fetch…” Jar Jar & Anakin start laughing….silly humans!

They continue down the path when Anakin spots something & looks at the sky, he nudges JJ who is now looking left & right. Do you see them, the AT-ATs? They leave the cover of the woods & at the fork they take the high path & as they crest the hill-yep-there they are, all lined up 2 by 2 as far as they can see. The AT-ATs are not moving. This must be an obstacle course. I wish I had my hovercraft. Maybe next time the Professor will let us bring them. Jar Jar & Anakin pretend to fly & zoom all over racing each other.

After a while Jar Jar says "Hey Anakin, I'm tired! What's next?" "Ok, the map says to keep away from the Sharp Antler (path) & to stay on the main trail. Keep on the lookout for the green marker that says Sewer Pipeline.
Once you see that pole on your left, look for the 5-sister tree. A mighty tree with 5 trunks from it's base! She will be on the right." As they get closer to the woods edge, Jar Jar says to Anakin "I'll race ya to her!"

He runs the path into the woods-not even 10 seconds when he hears Anakin say "Hey, I think this is it." Jar Jar turns around, takes a step or two, and then he sees it. The biggest, coolest tree, the 5-sister tree. WOW! This is where you will find Jar Jar, behind the tree resting under the rock.

They rest & have their snack of jellybeans & lemonade, talking about how they would fly between all the AT-ATs……when they hear a loud noise, Anakin looks around, CRACK! He heard it again. “Anakin! Anakin! Do you have the answer? Weren’t you paying attention? I asked, What is 2 x 2 x 2 x 2?” “16 AT-ATs Sir!” Anakin replies. Everyone giggles. CRACK! goes the ruler on the desk & Anakin looks around the room & sees Jar Jar sitting at his desk & realizes he must of dozed off……he’s in Algebra class & not on Earth!

Once you have found the letterbox, head back past the AT-ATs toward the Lake. Continue on the path to the right (cross the wooden bridge & go Left) & you will loop back to the playground parking lot! Hope you enjoyed the adventure!
