Many folks come to Kernville, look around, then remark "What a quaint old town". While the town is certainly quaint, it's location is fairly new. The town of Kernville was moved to it's present location in the early 1950's when the dam was built and Lake Isabella created. So where is Old Kernville ? These letterbox directions will take you to a overlook of the "Old" Kernville and if water level allows , let you poke around some of the old foundations. For more details the many books by Bob Powers give the reader a wealth of information and this letterbox is planted in his honor for he was one of Old & New Kernville's prominent citizens.

From Kernville drive south toward the old cemetery and park after turning onto the Cemetery rd. The Cemetery road is marked with " Point of historical interest " signs. Walk to the vertical stop sign marking the way out. From the stop sign take a heading of 180 degrees. You will see a hill in the foreground just before the lake.On top of this hill note the boulder grouping. Return to your vehicle or hike from this spot and go down the road that heads generally toward this hill. Continue toward the backside (southeast) of this hill (if the lake hasn't covered the road) to a fairly large building foundation. This foundation is what is left of Peterson's Hall and later became the 3rd schoolhouse. Walk up the red steps to the red landing and take a heading of 330 degrees to the top of the hill and the top boulder group. Go up to that boulder group and take 4 paces west of the west side and look under some movable rocks for the letterbox and a copy of a map of Old Kernville. The usual warnings apply, particularly those about Rattlesnakes. If the lake is "up" and covering the foundations the letterbox can still be found very high and dry.

If time permits, make a visit to the old cemetery, check out the old headstones and the great view of the Kern River
