THIS BOX WAS WASHED AWAY IN THE JANUARY FLOODING. HOPE TO REPLACE.

The Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve near Mahomet, Illinois provides a lovely setting for outdoor activities. From Interstate 74, take Exit 172 toward Gibson City. About half a mile north, you will see the entrance to the Forest Preserve on your left. While you are in the park, be sure to visit the Early American Museum and Botanical Gardens.

Drive through the entrance and follow the road, always bearing left. The road winds back and eventually through a covered bridge. Take note of the date when the bridge was dedicated.

After you cross the bridge, you will see the road turn right. You, however, will want to turn left into the small parking spot. Exit your car and find the foot trail leading to the river.

Add together the digits of the year (not the century) when the covered bridge was dedicated. Add 1 to the sum and move that number of steps down the trail. Look down and to your left for a ball of tree roots. Pick up the clump of roots and you’ll see the box.

Happy Hunting!
