From Wofford Heights drive up highway 155 about 8 miles to the Shirley Meadows/Rancheria Road. Turn toward Shirley Meadows and find a place to park near the Forest Service Buildings. South of the Forest Service Buildings you will find the start of the Unal Trail, "on the trail of the bear".
Note: The letterbox site was changed on 9/5/2004 as some geocachers decided to use our original hiding spot to hide their geocache. I guess the forest isn't big enough for them to find their own spot.
Mountain bikers use this trail too so watch for traffic. It is a gradual climb over
a well marked trail of about a 3 mile loop, (dogs OK). Pick up a map/brochure from the box and begin your hike. At the first trail split, stay left and continue in a general southerly direction. You will find trail marker 11 and approximately 18 steps at 30 degrees will put you in front of a small cedar tree at 300 degrees.Look for the isosceles triangle to the left of the tree. The letterbox is slightly above the triangle among rocks. After stamping in continue up the trail if you wish to Unal Peak and then to the remnants of a Tubatulabal Village and then the trail down hill. When we planted the box there was still snow on the ground and on the trees; the surroundings were quite magical. This box is for Deb. We miss her so. Take a picnic and enjoy the cool high country above Lake Isabella.
When researching our clues please be aware that when previous searchers list “ATTEMPTED” on the clue sheets it may reflect more on their abilities as finders than indicate whether the box is viable or not. We do monitor our clues and boxes pretty well and appreciate the notes written to us by those that find or attempt our letterboxes.
