This box is the seventh in our series, highlighting points of interest along the Arizona Trail, a nearly-completed hiking/biking/equestrian trail that crosses the state from north to south.

HISTORY
There are 1.6 million acres included in the Kaibab National Forest, covering areas north and south of the Grand Canyon. The elevation on the north rim is significantly higher than on the south, topping out at around 9,000 feet. This part of the forest is surrounded by dry, low-lying plateau, essentially making this an isolated sky-island. Keep an eye out for some of the species that are unique to this area, including the Kaibab deer and the white-tailed, tuft-eared Kaibab squirrel. On our way back to the car, we got a few nice pictures of a beautiful horned toad!

TO THE BOX
From the intersection of Highway 89A and State Route 67 in the small town of Jacob Lake, drive east 2 miles. Turn south on Forest Road 205 and find trailhead parking immediately on the left.

Go uphill, heading southeast on the Arizona Trail. Just as the trail flattens out, you’ll see a tall, thin AZ Trail marker with a squirrel on it. From the marker, go due south for 37 steps to a 7-foot tall stump, then take three more steps at 250* from north to a much shorter stump. The box is hidden on the near side, under some of the tree’s loose bark.
