** This box will be pulled for maintenance April2015. Stay tuned for updates!**

*******Bring repellent~the mosquitos were numerous!!!******
From Rt 203 in Windham Center, drive to the intersection of Rts 203 and 32 in South Windham. Cross Rt 32 to stay on 203 which becomes Machine Shop Hill RD. Drive approximately .3 miles to Pigeon Swamp RD on the left. Turn onto Pigeon Swamp RD and continue to the end where you will see a sign board for Pigeon Swamp Preserve, part of Joshua's Trust. Park and go to the sign board.
From the board look to the south to see an opening in a large stone wall. Go through the opening to get on the yellow blazed trail. Follow the blazed trail through several stone walls, counting them as you go. The first stone wall you went through after parking is #1. After going through the 4th stone wall you will come to an intersection. Take the left path toward the Mill Site. There is a wooden sign to show the way. Continue to follow the yellow blazes. The path was muddy in spots when we placed the box, but definitely passable. We saw deer tracks in the mud as well as boot and dog prints. After crossing through a 5th stone wall you will soon arrive at a very large tree with some broken branches just before the opening through a 6th stone wall. At this point you should hear water from a stream. Continue on the trail past a pile of stones on the left. The trail dips down over what was a dry stream bed the day we went through. Here the trail bends to the left and you will begin to see the stream you heard on your right. You will soon come to a fork in the path. Look to the right fork and you will see a lovely wooden bridge over the stream. Trip trap trip trap~Cross the bridge (Beware of trolls!!) and stop at the bottom of its steps. Take a bearing of 250 degrees and walk approximately 12 paces (left foot only) to a large rock sticking out of the ground like an upside down "V". With this rock at your left hip take a bearing of 244 degrees and walk 8 mores paces to a pair of medium sized rocks with the left leaning on the right. On the SW side of this formation look next to the biggest rock, near a much smaller third rock, under the broken branches and leaves for the littlest Billy Goat Gruff. Stamp in and return back over the bridge to follow the path back to your car. Remember after crossing back over the bridge to take the left fork in the path keeping the stream on your left side as you walk.
We hope you enjoy this box, which is Kaluga Crew's first placement! We were accompanied by Graham Cracker Grandma and two of our dogs and we all enjoyed the flora and fauna of this beautiful spot. Kaluga Mama could have done without the big ugly black snake she surprised after crossing the bridge and leaving the trail. It slithered to the stream in a hissy fit (pun intended). Seems she interupted its hunt for lunch as a large toad also hopped away from nearby at the same moment! We also saw chipmunks, an adorable little turtle with an orange belly which we think may have been a baby painted turtle, and lots of deer tracks, jack-in-the pulpits and tons and tons of ferns.
The Kaluga Kid has loved the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff since he was two years old. We hope to add the middle sized Billy Goat and the largest Billy Goat letterboxes soon. Who knows, the Troll himself may even get his own box!
