--From Sierraville go south 18 miles on HWY 49 to Bassett's Station. Turn right, go 1.5 miles, turn left on FS RD 93, go 1.25 miles. Sardine Lake campground is on left.
--Continue driving past Sardine Lake campground, .25 miles past campground is a turnout with a sign that reads "Sand Pond Interpretive Trail". Park here.
--Descend on stone edged trail to the sign that reads "No Bikes on Trail". Take the boardwalk trail.
--Boardwalk will end in a gravel trail which leads to a second boardwalk.
--Follow second boardwalk until you reach a broad meadow on your right hand with a Volkswagon size granite boulder on the edge.
--Find the bench by the granite boulder, stand between the bend and the boulder with your back to the meadow.
--Look between the trees and you should be facing a dead tree broken off about 12' from the ground.
--Walk up to the tree and find the path to the left that leads to a small rock outcropping (rocks are visible from the tree).
--What you are looking for is under a small pile of stacked rocks on the outcropping.
--Replace letterbox under rocks
--Retrace steps OR continue on a flat loop that ends at Sand Pond.
--At Sand Pond there will be a crossing of trails with a picnic table and grill at the juncture. Straight ahead is an outhouse and parking for Sand Pond
--To the left is Sand Pond.
--To the right is a trail that parallels the road and closes the loop at the boardwalk.
