Old Fort Travis is probably one of the most forgotten historical locations in Texas. The Republic of Texas purchased the site in 1898, and the Fort was completed 1899. (This same site was used during the Civil War (1861-65) by the Confederate Army, then called Fort Green. It was was also used before, then during the first Texas Revolution around 1813.) During the WWI and WWII the Fort housed coastal artillery batteries. After WWII the Fort was declared surplus property and the guns were removed but the fortifications remained. By 1976, Old Fort Travis had been turned into a county park. Now, there are tent sites and cabanas for overnight stays, picnic sites and tables, a very nice playground for kids. The bunkers are still there and are really neat to see.

Directions:

From the Port Bolivar Ferry landing, go east on Hwy 87 for about 1 mile. (You will pass the Bolivar Lighthouse on your left.) Turn right (south) onto Anderson Ave, stay to your right. Immediately turn left onto 10th Street. Go straight into the entrance, park in the circular drive right in front of the entrance.

Clues:

From the circular drive, face the Gulf (south). Turn to your right, should be a start of a pathway. (Blue trash can on the left and white sign with "No unauthorized vehicles beyond this point.".) Now you are looking at the 236 Bunker (looks like a big green hill). Walk down the path till you reach the Bunker (236). Once you reach the Bunker, turn to your left. Walk over to the large metal doors, the North Entrance, the sign will be above. To the left of the doors will be a electric pole. A few feet away to the left of the pole will be a small tree growing in a concrete container, part of the Bunker. The camo Lb is in the base of this tree covered with leaves.

*Of course, watch for critters (like snakes), gloves would help. Please recover and re -hide well!

Happy Hunting!
