Drangonfly Dash (Jamison Creek Nature Preserve):
From US Rte 42:
Take US 42 North to Davis Rd. Turn left (just before 250 exit and bridge). Turn left onto Hillcrest Drive off of Davis Rd. Just before the bridge on the right is the entrance to Jamison Creek Nature Preserve. Parking is on the street.
From St. Rte. 60:
Take St. Rt. 60 into Ashland. At stoplight where hospital sits is Hillcrest Drive. Turn right. At the bottom of Hillcrest Drive is a bridge and at the other end of the bridge on the left is the entrance to Jamison Creek Nature Preserve. Parking is on the street.
History:
Frank S. Jamison was born in Maryland in 1844 and moved to Ashland County in 1864. He lived on a farm that the creek ran through (where Bretheren Care and the Ashland Country Club Golf Course now sit). While living on the farm, Jamison was plowing with a three-horse team beside the creek when the horses got caught in the tug ropes. Jamison tried to release the horses when one of them kicked him in the stomach causing his immediate death. Soon after his death the creek was named after him.
Directions to Letterbox:
Follow the trail back into the woods. After a small jaunt you will pass over four black drainage pipes, keep going. Further on down the trail you will come to a clearing with a new development on the right. Just past the development is a “Y” in the trail; the one to the left goes back toward the creek and ends abruptly, the one to the right is the one to take. Once on the trail for a bit you will begin to hear traffic from US 42 on the right. Just before you get close to the highway there is a smaller worn path to the left headed towards the creek with a big knotty tree sitting at the back. Turn left and take the smaller path. Follow the small path down around the big knotty tree until you are facing it. To your left is a fallen tree that landed on another live tree that is leaning to the left. Where those two trees meet is where the letterbox is hidden under two large stones.
