Rated: Easy 1/2 mile round trip
Crushed gravel rail trail. Ideal for bikes as well as hikers.
Prize for first finders.
Location: Jamaica State Park
Directions: From Rt.30 in Jamaica turn onto Depot St. go over green metal bridge(West River) turn left into park.
Pull over at the Rangers station pay the admission fee grab a trail guide and follow the paved road to the day use parking area.
Jamaica State Park is rich in natural beauty and colorful history due mostly to the West River. It serves as a plentiful fishing spot then it meanders through the park, slows temporarily and deepens to create an ideal swimming hole, the Salmon Hole. The West river is also the site of white water canoe and kayak events held each spring and fall. Further upstream, a 125 foot waterfall awaits hikers.(Letterbox hikers as well) check the clues for Penguins at the Falls. My daughter and I have really come to enjoy camping here over the years and thought it would be great to place a letterbox here as well.
Clues: After you've parked, the trail starts on the other side of the chain hung sign reading "Do Not Enter" Pass the playground and picnic area and follow the trail into the woods. Continue until you reach Marker #1 Labeled Mammals of Vermont. Look up the hill to find two very large rocks one atop of the other what you seek is in the front right corner where the two rocks meet. Please be discreate when rehidding, this trail is well traveled. If you've never been here before(even if you have) please continue on, the river and surroundings are wonderful. Enjoy.
