1.) Drive to Mt. Evans (West from Denver off I-70, near Idaho Springs). Follow the road signs and enter the park through the toll both which is past Echo Lake and the visitor center. Once, in the park follow the highest road in North America to Summit Lake. While driving make sure to watch for the abundant wildlife. The brown lumps in the road aren't usually rocks so slow down and take a picture. The lump is likely one of the areas yellow-bellied marmot sunning on the road. Mountain goats and bighorn ship are also common sittings in the wilderness of the park or just on the shoulder of the road.
2.) Park in the Summit Lake parking lot and walk to the Summit Lake trail head just past the small warming cabin and bathrooms. Follow the Summit Lake trail until you reach the Mt. Evans trail head sign. At this sign look left 100 yards for the wildness permit box. Hike to this sign/box.
3.) From the wilderness permit box look straight up hill for a boulder jutting out of the mountain pointing east or to your left. Walk to the top side of this rock and face west toward the cliff faces. Take 15-20 steps west. Stop. Look up hill about ten yards for a rock with a pink hue. Hike to this rock. Look for the letter box above the rock with a pink a hue under a granite boulder and pile of smaller rocks.
**This is a hike for all ages. It is easy to find and a short mild hike--so it is great for small children. The park has infinite other hiking routes and trails which can be taken up before or after finding the box for adventure seekers. Also, there is a nice picnic table area near the base of the Summit Lake trail and also at Echo Lake (before the park entrance) for those who want to make a day of it and pack a picnic.
