Note: on Feb. 18,2010 we received a note from cato442 that the box wasn't available due to construction in the area. We noticed that they listed it as "attempted" so the box is probably viable.

Gull in the Sky, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo County. Easy walk, dogs are Ok here on a leash.

From the Marina parking lot of the Bay Cafe and kayak rental take the wooden steps as they zig zag up to the top of the nearest hill on your left. Continue up the steps (now stone) to the top of the railing enclosed hill overlooking the museum, golf course and beautiful bay. Locate the 2 U.S. Coast Geodetic survey markers. From Survey marker White 1883 with an arrow in the middle located just outside of the railing the letter box is located approximately 18 paces at 105 degrees. From Survey marker 1883 1965 with a triangle in the middle located inside the railing, the letter box is located approximately 16 paces at 70 degrees.

The box is at the base of a Eucalyptus tree under a large lichen covered boulder against the tree. Go down and around to the bottom of this boulder. Be careful walking on the leaves as they are slippery. The view from the overlook is best at sunset although you will have plenty of company. Plan on arriving about a half hour before sunset with a picnic and you will be able to "box" and enjoy the view in solitude.

We received a note on 12/25/2007 that a seeker found the large crevice, but could not locate the loaf sized rock. We believe they were looking too low. The loaf sized rock is near the base of the tree, not below the tree.

Before you set out, please read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.

When researching our clues please be aware that when previous searchers list “ATTEMPTED” on the clue sheets it may reflect more on their abilities as finders than indicate whether the box is viable or not. We do monitor our clues and boxes pretty well and appreciate the notes written to us by those that find or attempt our letterboxes.

Please contact placer directly or through the LBNA chat list regarding status rather than unofficial data bases. Up to date status can only be ascertained from placer as other information services will not have current data. Listing information about this letterbox on unauthorized information services is not appreciated by the placer.
