North Dakota State University is located in northwest Fargo, the largest city in North Dakota with a population of approximately 80,000 people. The metro area, which includes the cities of West Fargo, Moorhead, Minn., and Dilworth, Minn., numbers approximately 158,000. Of that, nearly 20,000 people are college students. The campus is approximately 30 square blocks and skirts residential neighborhoods and commercial areas. Downtown and the West Acres shopping mall are only minutes away from the campus. In its entirety, NDSU is a small community with its own newspaper, post office, campus stores and fast-food restaurants and a population of 10,000 people.
Your quest will start at the intersection of 12th Ave North and Albrecht Avenue (this will be east of Interstate 29). Actually, I guess it might begin before this, as you search for a nearby street to park your vehicle. You will be able to find a space if you go a block or two south, remembering that letterboxing is all about getting off the couch and going for a walk. Besides, since this is the first letterbox in Eastern North Dakota, you will want to savor the experience. Once you’re on foot, stop to contemplate the nature of comedy and tragedy on the northwest corner of 12th and Albrecht, then walk north on Albrecht, onto the NDSU campus. When you spy the big rock to the northeast, cross over and say hello to Herbert Albrecht. Turn your back to him, and walk toward the bridge. Cross the bridge, and turn right at the bike rack. Follow the sidewalk past Ladd Hall, and cross the street in front of the building that reminds you of Dances with Wolves. When you are in front of Hultz Hall, walk on a heading of 300 degrees. Turn slightly toward the left, pass under where there might be people who don’t like to go outside to change classes, and spot some steps with metal railings. To the left of the steps is a wide, low bush. The NDSU Bison is under the bush, behind the large rock in front.
