Enjoy a visit to lovely Van Horn Park - a surprisingly wild patch of land in northern Springfield.

Navigate to 628 Armory St in Springfield. Across the road is the entrance to the parking lot. Drive all the way in and park facing the ballfields.

At the left end of the parking area you will have a clear view to the playstructure and splash park. Walk on over.

Look for the black cement block building and head down the trail behind it. You will come to a triangle island with a bench in the middle of the paved walking trail.

Follow the road that goes past the pond with the drainage structure on your right.

Follow the road to the right.

Enjoy a leisurely walk along the trail. You will pass a paved trail on the left, then a bench and trash can on your right, then an exit to the street and a brick school on the right.

Look for a second bench and trash can with two stones behind them set up like tombstones.

Starting from the trash can, walk about 45 paces along the road until you see a dirt trail heading off to the right. Look for a pair of trees making a "V" on the left of the road.

Standing in front of the V trees, look to the other side of the road at 280 degrees. You should see a small standing, rotted tree about 6 paces from the road.

At the base of the tree you will find the letterbox under a large piece of wood.

This is a busy park trail so please be careful not to be discovered while you are handling the letterbox.
