Tigers at Twilight

Mount Willard
Crawford Notch, NH
Confirmed Missing
Difficulty - Moderate. A 3.2 mile round trip with an elevation gain of 900ft. Very kid (and dog) friendly. Also very crowded on holiday weekends.

Background - If you don't want a big climb but desire spectacular views then this is the hike for you. As you drive north on 302 towards Crawford Notch it is impossible to miss the large cliff in front of you to the left of the road as you approach the Notch. This is Mt. Willard. The views from the top looking south at 302 winding below you are simply incredible. The trail starts at 1900' at Crawford Notch and quickly climbs to the top of Mt. Willard (2804').

Directions - This is an out and back on the same trail. The Mt. Willard trail begins on the same path as the Avalon trail but quickly departs from it. The trailhead is on the far side from the Crawford Depot in Crawford Notch. It follows up an old carraige trail so the path is wide, with good footing.

When you reach the top take time to admire the views of Webster across the valley and the Willey range to your right. Thanks to the gain going up the notch and the vertical you just climbed, the valley below stretches out over 1500' below you. The view here is better than that from many 4000' peaks in NH. Turn and notice the sign posted on the tree signifying that you have reached the peak of Mt. Willard. At 10o, behind the tree, you will notice a chest high erratic ~20 feet back in the trees. On the far right side, tucked in below the rock is the sleeping tiger.

When you are done with your quest take a little time to lounge on the ledges and enjoy the views.

Special Note: Placed on May 25, 2002 by Tracy (with her mom) on her 4th birthday.
