Thomas Mitchell Campbell was the twenty-fourth governor of Texas. He was born at Rusk, Texas, on April 22, 1856, the son of Thomas Duncan and Rachel (Moore) . He attended common schools at Rusk before entering Trinity University to study law in 1873. He became General Manager of the Great Northern Railroad and moved his family to their Palestine, Texas mansion (1892 to 1897). He first ran for governor in 1902 but lost the primary to S. W. T. Lanham. Using the campaign song “The Campbell’s Are Coming”, he was elected Governor in 1907 and reelected in 1909. He ran for United States Senate in 1912 but was defeated by former Governor Charles Allen Culberson. In 1914 he joined the Prohibitionists to try and stop the election of James E. “Pa” Ferguson. The town of Campbell, in Hunt County, Texas, was named for him after he was instrumental in building the East Line and Red River Railroad in the area with this community as its headquarters. He died at John Seal Hospital in Galveston in 1923.

This box is located in the Old City Cemetery in Palestine, Texas. Find the Anderson County courthouse and Crawford St., which is on its south side. Go east on E. Crawford St. for three blocks to Selden St., then turn right for a block to Market St. Turn left on market, then right on the second cemetery road. On your right, on the top of a hill is a tall obelish marker with the name Campbell on it.

Park the car and walk up the hill to the monument. Next to it is a bushy multi-trunk tree. The box is in the center of this tree covered with twigs and a rock. Please return the box to its resting place and recover it well.
