Start at Kings Beach on Humphry Street (at the Swampscott/Lynn town line). There is plenty of public off street parking here. Begin your search at the large white wooden "Welcome to Swampscott" sign with the green dory painted on it. With the ocean to your right, start counting the benches along the sidewalk. At the 19th bench, you there will be an obilisk shaped monument to your left. At this point you can look ahead and see a circular garden in a small bricked sitting area. Go to this spot to take in the great view of the ocean and to grab a yummy ice cream treat! Keep walking along side the ocean until you come to the gateway with the two large white orbs. You are getting closer! The next clue you will find is a metal lighthouse #253. Continue on from here, but turn your gaze upward to find the golden tooth. Once you spot the tooth, just beyond it is Whale Beach (where in 1828 a whale washed ashore and men gathered 25 barrels of oil from it). Look next for a crosswalk beside a house with a chimney marked 1789. Cross here and follow the road up the hill and around to the left towards a dead end. Along this street, search for the telephone pole marked 2 over 3. Beyond this pole you will see the secret stairs with a green metal railing. These are public beach access stairs that usually only locals know about. Count your way up to the 50th step, to the last landing before the top. Take a moment to catch your breath and take in the wonderful panoramic view. On a clear day you can see all of the Boston skyline, Nahant, and Swampscott Harbor. When you are ready, being watchful of curious neighbors, turn towards the top of the stairs. With your right hand, find the the railing post and place your hand on top of the knob. Reach in through the leafy growth towards the stone wall. You will se a large vine growing there, and tucked between the vine and the wall you will discover the Secret Stairs letterbox!
