BOX IS NO LONGER IN SERVICE. VANDALIZED.

Ulysses S. Grant and his family arrived in Galena in the spring of 1860 and rented a small Federal style brick house on High Street. Today it is privately owned and not plaqued or signed.

The house is on the trolley tour so you can drive by. You might want to walk up the "firehouse" stairs and you will come out quite close to the home...but a drive by will pass the house and take you to the box. You will also avoid LOTS of stairs.

Get a map of Galena. Take Franklin to Bench Street. (Bench is one way)

Right on Hill.

Left on Prospect.

Right on High Street. Pass St. Matthews Lutheran church and then look for a plain red brick home on the left. Did U.S. Grant take the stairs to his job at the leather shop when he left this home each morning?

Keep going and take a left on Hill Street and then a left on Dodge.

Find the Old Galena City Cemetery and park near the small gazebo.

Find the gate and enter. Follow the fence down the hill. You will pass some trees that are so big that maybe Grant saw them. His original home backs up to this cemetery.

Walk until you come to a beautiful maple about half way down. Turn left and walk up the slope until you come to the Meeker monument. (It's a little hard to read)

In the arborvitae next to this monument is The General.
