Lakeport is the county seat for Lake County. Find the Lake County Courthouse on Forbes Street. You can’t miss it, it’s the largest structure in downtown Lakeport. The next street parallel to Forbes in the direction of Clear Lake is Main Street and there you will see the old courthouse which is now the Lake County Museum. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday 12:00 to 4:00. Admission is $2.00. At some time early in the twentieth century the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, a national organization which discouraged and continues to discourage imbibing alcoholic spirits and the use of other drugs, donated something useful to the people of Lakeport on the grounds of the then courthouse.

This once useful item stands yet on the grounds, but it’s been moved from its original location and is no longer functional. Still it is decorative and reminds us of another era. Find this structure. Check out the stairs to the left. Check out the front of the building on the other side of the stairs. Find the ornate grill under the window. Below the grate, on the left side, wedged behind the woody old vine stem, maybe a few inches from the ground you will find the camo covered WCTU letterbox.

Rehide carefully and discretely so it cannot be seen by passersby.

From a current WCTU website:

The WCTU
Firmly believes and advocates
A lifestyle free of alcohol, tobacco, and other addictive drugs.
Its members comprise
The oldest non-sectarian woman's organization in the world
And as such, take the following pledge:

"I hereby solemnly promise, God helping me, to abstain from all distilled, fermented, and malt liquors, including beer, wine, and hard cider, and to employ all proper means to discourage the use of and traffic in the same."
