A week after the Civil War ended,
The soldiers had not gotten the news.
Gen. Tyler led the Battle of West Point
This battle, our soldiers did lose.

Hundreds of years later,
Archeaologists from Auburn went to work.
My brother was one of the leaders
As the artifacts were unearthed.

Now as you tread on this beautiful land,
remember those who came before.
Enjoy the history lesson
This site has in store.

From J. Smith Lanier insurance, Capital City Bank intersection, head out of town past the Presbyterian Church. You will see the historic marker for Fort Tyler. Turn right onto 6th Avenue. When you see the giant marble marker, pull into the parking lot. Go through the black iron gates and up the winding paved pathway. At the top of the pathway, you will see a history marker about the Reconstruction of West Point. Keep walking straight off the paved path onto the grass about 44 steps to a tall Oak tree. The letterbox is hidden in the shrubbery next to this tree (past the gate to the private home). There is a big rock on top of the box. Please return the box as you found it as maintenance is often cleaning up around the Fort.

Take a few minutes to read the history and enjoy the fort and cannons!
