Oakland Hill Cemetery #1

Oakland Hill Cemetery is located at the bottom of Barber St. in Medway. I grew up and still live on one of the parallel streets to Barber St. so when I got into Letterboxing it seemed like the perfect place to locate a few boxes.

This is the first of three boxes located in this fairly small cemetery. I designed these boxes to increase in difficulty. The first box is very easy, after this they only get harder. If you can find all three boxes you will pass my letterboxing challenge course. I tried to make it so that all aspects in finding letterboxes were included. I will tell you that if you want to find all three boxes in the same day to go and read them all now, so that you leave prepared.

I have a few notes of caution for this series of letterboxes. First off this cemetery sometimes has a little bit of traffic through it, both from people visiting graves and from people out on leisurely walks. My word of caution is to please be discrete if anyone is near or watching. Also the cemetery grounds keeper for Medway makes daily rounds to all of the cemeteries. He drives a tan Chevy pick-up with a yellow light bar behind the cab. He has a habit of watching anyone who is not obviously visiting a tombstone, so it’s best to wait until he leaves before searching and walking around. Other than that, just keep an eye out for poison ivy. I tried to plant the boxes away from the stuff; however, it’s always a possibility that some could pop up here and there. And my last thing to say is, if there is snow on the ground to please not go for these boxes. The locations of the boxes are off of the beaten path so footprints going off to random spots that are not clearly grave markers would, most likely, look suspicious. Now with all of that said, on to the clues!

The Clues:
• Follow the outer perimeter road (both paved and unpaved) until you find an unusual and very large quartz grave marker between two trees.
• From this stone look behind it and slightly to the right. There are two semi-small tombstones close together.
• From these stones look towards the woods for a lonely old stone.
• When facing the woods from this stone look slightly right into the woods.
• There is a fairly large tree with a hollow in the trunk. This natural hollow home is where the letterbox waits!
