PLEASE NOTE: AS OF 9/27/2018 - SEVERAL BOXES ARE REPORTED MISSING. PLEASE HOLD OFF TRYING THESE UNTIL I CAN INVESTIGATE FIX OR RETIRE THEM. MY APOLOGIES TO ANYONE WHO MADE AN ATTEMPT. -Renfield

Difficulty: Moderate
Time: 60-90 minutes

Background:
Several years ago, my brother introduced me to an online game called Runescape. Like Dungeons and Dragons, you play a character that goes on quests or just builds skills such as crafting, farming and magic. Soon, my family was online too. Last fall, we decided to have a Runescape party in which we would do everything in real life that we did in the game: craft pottery, cook Chompies (chicken) over a fire and of course, go on a quest. These four boxes are the quest. We put on witches' hats and capes and went tromping through woods and had a great time. We hope you do too.

This Letterbox contains a game that you can choose to play. If you do not, the length of time will be about 60 minutes to get all the boxes. Add about 30 minutes if you choose to play the game. There will be dice in some of the boxes to play the game. PLEASE RETURN THEM TO THE BOXES!

The Quest of Brigit the Dragon
Near the Rusty Anchor in Port Sarim, you come across two little people: Michaleen Oge Flynn and Mr. Maloney. They have terrible troubles. They come from an island infested with snakes. They asked St. Patrick to drive them out, but he's having car troubles.

After much questioning you come to learn there is really only one "snake", which in reality is a dragon and her name is Brigit. You agree to drive her off their island and they offer clues to a dragon shield that will protect you, a magic potion and of course Brigit herself. If you defeat her, you will receive the Dragon Sword of St. Patrick.

The box is located in the Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda, IL. The preserve crosses Fairfield Road. The box is located in the part of the woods on the west side of Fairfield Road. Use the entrance off Fairfield Road and go past the first parking area. Take a right on the road that leads to the Discovery Museum. Take the first road on the left following signs for Shelter “E”. The first parking lot you come to will have a wooded picnic area on your left and a prairie field on your right. Park here. If you go as far as Shelter “E”, you have gone too far.

There will be a doggie bag dispenser in the picnic area. Facing the woods with your back to the dispenser, you will see several trails into the woods. The trail on the far right is marked “Guided Tour-Snazberry Trail. Take that trail.

Magic Potion (Box #1):
When you meet up with Brigit, there is likely to be quite a battle. Having a magic potion will come in handy.

Take the trail into the lush but foreboding forest. The weather is wet on this isle often which makes the leaves green and the ground muddy. The air feels warmer and there is a faint smell of sulfur. Sure signs that a dragon is about. The trail will gently wind back and forth. Walk for about five minutes until you come to a very thick dead tree on your right (if you come to two small logs chained to the ground, you’ve gone too far). About 20 feet off the ground it is broken off. The remaining trunk resembles an ancient weathered old wizard. Behind this trunk is a large log. Inside covered by a piece of bark is the box.

Which magic potion you get is decided by the roll of red and white dice. Roll both. The red die decides what kind of potion it is; the white die decides the strength value.

Attack Potion: One dose will last an entire battle with Brigit. Add its strength value to the damage you inflict on a successful hit. For instance, if you roll a “3”, you will add “3” points of damage to every successful hit you make on the dragon (more explained later).

Defense Potion: One dose will last an entire battle with Brigit. Subtract its strength value from the damage inflicted by your enemy on a successful hit. For instance, if you roll a “3”, you will subtract “3” points of damage from every successful hit the dragon makes on you (more explained later).

Enter the type of potion and its strength below.

Dragon Shield (Box #2):
Now that you have the potion, it’s time to find the Dragon Shield. Without the Dragon Shield, you can not defend against Brigit’s fire breathe. This portion of the hike will take about 15-20 minutes. Continue on the trail in the direction you were going. In a short while, the trail will split, with the Guided Tour signs directing you to go right. Ignore this and go straight. The trail will go downhill until it comes to a “Y”. Go left. The trail is just inside the woods and runs along a large field. Soon, the trail will exit the woods and continue along side that field and later return into the woods. Shortly after crossing a drainage pipe, you will come to a “T”. Go right on the trail that goes uphill. Just at the top of the hill, exit the woods onto a grassy trail. There will be a fence post where you can exit the woods. Go left on this grassy trail until you come to a wide, clearly marked trail on your left that enters the woods. Just before you reach this trail, look to your left for a opening in the brush. Enter the woods here. This will take you past some thorny bushes into a wooded clearing. Just a few paces in you will see many logs and dead trees surrounding the largest tree in the area. This tree has clearly been subjected to dragon breathe. On one side all the bark has fallen off the tree. At the foot of that tree, under the bark that has fallen off, is the box. Exit the brush the way you came in once you've gotten your shield.

Brigit the Dragon (Box #3):
Well, now is your last chance to turn tail and run. Do you have the courage to fight? If you do, leave the grassy trail and take the wide trail that enters the woods. It winds downhill for a short while and then goes back uphill. Just as the trail levels off, you will find a trail to your left. Take that trail downhill to a creek bed. A tree has fallen across the creek bed. Cross just before you get to the fallen tree and pick up a trail behind the fallen tree, going up hill on the other side. Twice more the trail will wind around trees that have fallen across the trail. After the second tree, the trail straightens out. In a short while you will pass a trail on your left. 20 steps further, stop and look to your left. You will see a log that looks something like a dragon’s head with a pointy nose. Brigit’s lair is in this log.

Battle Instructions:
If you play Runescape, your hit points for this battle are the same as your character in the game. If you do not play Runescape, your hit points for this battle are 50 + the roll of six 6-sided (standard) dice. You have 6 Lobsters that you can eat to heal (restore) 12 points each. You may not attack on a turn that you have consumed a Lobster.

Brigit the Dragon has 86 hit points. In order to fight Brigit the Green Dragon, you will need to empty the contents of the box to use it to roll your dice into. If you are hiking with a friend, have one of you play for Brigit.

You get to make the first strike by rolling 1 white die and 3 red die. A roll of 1-3 on the white die is a miss. A roll of 4-6 on the white die is a hit. If you do not make a hit, pick up all the dice and pass the turn to Brigit. The roll of the red dice, plus the strength of an Attack Potion (if you have one) is the damage you do to Brigit.

Use three green dice and the other white die for Brigit’s attacks. The roll of 1-3 is a miss; 4-6 is a hit on the white die. The sum of the green dice, minus the strength of a Defense Potion (if you have one) is the damage she does to you.

If you use a Lobster, use the counter below to keep track of how many you’ve used. If you consume one, you may not attack that turn.

Treasure: Dragon Sword of St. Patrick (Box #4):
This is a mystery-microbox. If you defeat Brigit look in the box she sits on to discover the Dragon Sword of St. Patrick. You may keep this and the other "treasures" (stamps in your book) as a thank you for driving the snake out.
