C is for Camel

11/6/22 update: logbook has been replaced. All is well except, sadly a tree has fallen across all remaining animals. It was awful to see them that way, broken. BUT the spot the box is tucked into is still 100% accessible and easy.

While following the clues to JAMO’s wonderful Killing Time in Slater Park letterboxes, we happened across a memory.

Tucked away in the woods were leftovers from playtimes past. Great cement animals to climb on and each with its letter on the side.

It took me back to childhood. My family isn’t sure if it was Slater Park, or another Rhode Island park, that we used to climb on these kinds of creatures. But wherever they were, we remember them clearly.

Location:
Slater Memorial Park
Newport Ave, Route 1A, Pawtucket, RI

Slater Memorial Park stretches along Ten Mile River. Within the stately grounds are picnic tables, tennis courts, playgrounds, a river walk, and two historic sites. Eight generations of Daggetts lived in Daggett House, Pawtucket's oldest home, which was built in 1685. Among the antiques on display are Civil War memorabilia and bedspreads owned by Samuel Slater. The Looff Carousel, built by Charles I. D. Looff between 1880 and 1890 and installed in the park in 1910, has 42 horses, three dogs, and a lion, camel, and giraffe that are the earliest examples of the Danish immigrant's work. It was restored in 1978.

OPEN: Park: Memorial Day-Labor Day, 8-9 p.m.; Labor Day-Memorial Day, 8-dusk. Carousel hours: Easter Sunday-Jun 30, Sat-Sun, 11-5 p.m.; Jul 1- Labor Day, Daily, 11-5 p.m.; Labor Day and Columbus Day weekends, 11-5 p.m.

Clues:
Start your search by going into Slater Park via the Newport Ave entrance. You will pass baseball fields on the right. Keep driving; when you get to a V choose the left road. You will pass “Shops” on your right. Follow sign, straight, to Looff Carousel.

When you get to the yellow building on the right (the carousel building), take a right into the parking lot directly after the carousel. Park anywhere in this lot.

Walk to the carousel.

If the carousel is open go inside, buy a ticket and take a ride. Note how much one ticket costs, that will soon be a clue! Cost = X

If it’s closed, walk around to the front of the building and look in the windows. In one window you will see an old white carriage, with lettering on the side. Peirini Ice Cream will hold a clue…. But you need to do some math!
Take the number in the address and minus 103. Street number – 103 = Y

After you have had a whizzing ride on the Looff (it’s FAST!), exit out the door closest to the parking lot. Head northeast to find the Dog Park. This field is enclosed by a chain link fence. Go to the northern most corner of the fence. Turn right around that corner and walk X divided in half (OR walk Y) paces along the fence. (Remember, a pace is two steps.) Turn left into the woods (a very rough opening/path). As soon as you step into the woods you will find my memories from 30+ years ago. T for Turtle, M for Moose and C for Camel.

The camel is protecting the letterbox. Behind the camel find some cement with a blue stripe. The letterbox is hidden under C for Camel behind an easily moved block of red stripe cement.

Please replace the box carefully, being sure to lock all the sides of the box, after you stamp in.

We’d love to hear from you about your find, your Looff ride and if you have any memories of similar cement animals! RIFamily@cox.net

Be sure to visit all the great letterboxes in Slater Park, there are quite a few!
