Screaming Jenny: During the period of the Cival War, there was a young girl named Jenny who lived with her family along the railroad tracks of Harpers Ferry. One evening Jenny headed out to the train station to meet her father who was heading home from the war. Jenny started walking with lantern in hand. The wind picked up that evening and Jenny's dress brushed up against her lantern and caught fire. Frightened, Jenny began to run up the tracks toward the train station. This only made the flames grow and before she knew it, she was engulfed in flames, screaming, she ran faster and faster trying to blow out the flames. As the night train came towards the station, the conductor could see a screaming ball of fire coming towards him. It was too late for him to stop. Unfortunately, Jenny never had the chance to welcome her father home that evening.
To this day, on a dark night when the trains are coming into the station at Harpers Ferry, the conductors report a screaming ball of fire coming towards them on the tracks. As they pull their brakes, and attempt to stop, the ball dissapears.
To find this letter box, start from down in the historic streets of Harpers Ferry. Go to the overlook where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers combine. Cross the bridge where automobiles are not permitted. Spiral down and stop at the bottom. If your combination is 33, then you should walk in that direction. Look to your right and find a spot to climb the stone wall up to the next level. Go to the sign with your combination number. Facing North, walk ten paces and stop. Look to the stone wall to your right, and the Screaming Jenny letterbox is behind some stones in the wall. Wait for travelers on the canal to pass and be discrete. If you look up, you will find Jenny's house across the road. Please place the box back just as you found it and dont tell anyone what you were doing there!
Last bit of advice....this area can be heavily populated at times with hikers and bikers. Please be as careful as you can with placing the box back so that no one sees you. Good Luck!
