Byron Forest Preserve
7993 N River Rd
Byron, IL

The Byron Forest Preserve District maintains nearly 6.5 miles of trails that meander throughout the forest preserve properties. The trails are well marked, and many travel through the beautiful restored prairieland and wooded areas. For more information, view their website at: www.byronforestpreserve.com

We have placed the boxes so finding them does not entail a long hike. But you can plan your time to hike as many of the trails as you wish and enjoy the prairieland.

NOTE: DUE TO FOREST PRESERVE BURNS AND THINNING OUT OF TREES, THE FIRST TWO BOXES ARE MISSING ... BUTTERFLY IS THE ONLY BOX STILL AVAILABLE.

To begin, park in the South Shelter parking area.

WEISKOPF OBSERVATORY
You will notice the Weiskopf Observatory just north of where you park. Walk south along the eastern tree line of the field with the South Shelter until you see two tall trees which are missing their bark. Weiskopf Observatory is resting between these trees.

Markers (not included): Gray or silver, and blue.
This box contains the only logbook.

CONEFLOWER
Continue south down the gravel path. Just as you're entering the woods you'll see a stand with a Trail Map. Look at the map to see what's available for hiking. When you're done, turn around. On the other side of the path is a tree branch caught among the trunks of another tree. Within these trunks and branches is Coneflower. Be sure to hide it well with branches and bark.

Markers (not included): Pink (or light purple) and green.

BUTTERFLY [The only box still available]
Go across the field to a small path at the SW side of the field. Take the small path. You will immediately come to a T. Turn left. You will see an octopus tree on the left side of the path. From the tree walk 10 paces on path. To your left you will see a downed, rotten log resting against a small live tree. The box is at the base of the live tree under the rotten log.

Markers (not included): Brown, black, yellow … or whatever you wish to use.

You can now go back the way you came, or follow the path you're on. Enjoy the prairielands!

Be sure to seal the boxes well and rehide as well or better than you found them.

These beautiful stamps were carved by "Krait." Thank you!!
