*****Box is still At Location (8-24-07) edited to make finding easier*******

****Do Not attempt to find this letterbox, people have had trouble for some reason. I will re-do some of the clues and repost the new directions************

Information about this letterbox:

Scenic area with historic buildings, ruins, and a lake, river, waterfall.

Clues: Medium
Terrain: Easy/Moderate
Time: about 45min, but may take longer if you explore the area

Hiking shoes boots suggested but sneakers would be ok

Directions by Car:

From Rt. 17 (Mahwah area) - Take Rt. 17 North into NY and take the Ringwood/West Milford exit (Rt. 72) which is just before Sloatsburg. Go 5.2 miles and turn right onto Margaret King Ave. at the ballpark on your right. Go 2.5 miles to the end and make a right onto Greenwood Lake Tpk. (Rt. 511). Go about one mile and the LPI Visitors Center will be on your right after crossing the Monksville Reservoir causeway.

From Rt. I-80 (New York City) - Take GWB to Rt. I-80 West to Exit 53, (Rt. 23 North). Take Rt. 23 approximately 7 miles to Rt. 287 North. Follow directions below.

From Rt. I-80 (PA and points west) - Take Rt. I-80 East to Exit 43 onto Rt. 287 North. Follow directions below.

From Route I-287 Northbound - Take Exit 55. At the end of the ramp make a right heading north on Ringwood Ave. (Rt. 511). Stay on Ringwood Ave./Rt. 511 for almost 11 miles through Haskell, Wanaque and all the way around Wanaque Reservoir and past the Monksville Reservoir dam. After you cross over the Monksville Reservoir causeway, the Long Pond Ironworks Visitors Center will be on the right.

From Route I-287 Southbound (from NY State Thruway) - Take Exit 57 (Skyline Drive). Follow Skyline Drive to the end. At the fork intersection with Route 511 (Greenwood Lake Turnpike) turn right onto Route 511. Travel about 6-7 miles around Wanaque Reservoir and past the Monksville Reservoir dam. After you cross over the Monksville Reservoir causeway, the Long Pond Ironworks Visitors Center will be on the right. (NOTE: Skyline Drive has steep and curvy sections - use Northbound directions below if preferred, but from exit ramp make a right and then left onto Ringwood Ave./Rt. 511.)

From Route 23 - Take Union Valley Road (Route 513) about 6 miles and bear right onto Marshall Hill Road, which becomes Greenwood Lake Turnpike (Route 511). The Long Pond Ironworks Visitors Center will be on the left.

Park in front of the visitors center (an off white building with brown doors and shutters)

Walking Directions:

Take the path to the left of the visitors center. Continue on the path past 2 houses, a barn, and then another two houses. The path will then join up with a gravel road. Continue down the road past a house on the left and a barn on the right. Cross the stream on a bridge, and continue until you see the “The Company Store” sign. Just ahead the trail splits; stay to the right, taking the trail closest to the lake. Follow the trail past some ruins and up a hill to two white buildings. Pass the first on the right side and the second on the left side. Continue up a small wooded path up to a bridge. DO NOT CROSS THE BRIDGE, but rather continue over it. Follow this narrow path upstream until you are above the waterfall (feel free to stop along the way and admire the beauty or take a few photos). Walk to the top of the waterfall, you should be standing on bedrock. What you are looking for is located in a crack in the rock off to the right. It is located near the base of a tree growing in the crack. Remember to hide the box well again after you find it.
