Weeping Willow Letterbox, Ludlow VT

Ludlow is on Route 103. If you are going north, go up through town and at the little park, take the right at the “Y” by the laundry. Go straight at the stop sign; you are on High street. Turn right up Gill Terrace.

If you’re going south, on Main Street, turn left at the stoplight onto Depot street, then a right at the stop sign in front of the Catholic church onto High Street. Turn left up Gill Terrace.

Turn left and park way in at the Gill Odd Fellows Home, a nursing home. Find the two white pines on the lawn on the right of the parking lot with a picnic table and chairs (these were not there last I heard, and may be put out in spring and taken in for the winter months). Go to the tree that is closest to the streetlight and the LP gas tank. Facing west (away from the entrance), line up the two trees until you can’t see the second. Start walking across the pavement and lawn in a direct line with the two pines toward the trees in the distance. You will find a path into the woods and down the hill. There is a large dead tree across the path, climb over this.

Go all the way down and you will be near the entrance to the Pleasant View Cemetery. This is good walking territory. Take a good walk anywhere, and return to the trail to find the Weeping Willow letterbox, or just turn around now.

Going back up the trail, you will see an old stone retaining wall on your right. Look up the steep bank to the left, you will see a small 6 to 8” diameter tree above you with an obvious root pattern showing like a big “A” with a rounded top, or a large stirrup. Leave the trail to go up to find the letter box under leaves behind the root pattern. There is a nice big rock close by the trail to sit on and stamp up.

This stamp has been broken and mended. Please be careful of it and if you like, try to slide the two parts closer together by carefully pushing them together.

Be sure to rehide well, behind the roots so it won't get washed down by rain water.
