Revolutionary Soldier

Follow Route 103 north of Ludlow to Mt Holly. Turn right onto Old Turnpike Road at Harry’s Restaurant. Keep right on this road until a sharp right onto Lake Ninevah Road. This dirt road goes behind Lake Ninevah. You will pass the entrance to Joseph Wiltshire State of Vermont boat launch area. You will come to a sort of four corners, with the left branch a jeep trail. Park here, near the jeep trail turn. There also might be a sign indicating Farm and Wilderness Youth Camps here. Take the straight
(not left (jeep trail) or right (Patch Brook Road) and walk about a quarter mile on the dirt road. You will pass one camp on the left. Later, on the left, will be a wooden sign commemorating the Grave of the Unknown Revolutionary Soldier put up by the Boy Scouts and a large granite marker. Take the trail into the woods and up the hill. There are some blowdowns here that you may need to go around carefully. About 700 yards from the road will be another wooden sign, a flag stand, and a pile of stones which is the grave of the soldier who died there more than 225 years ago. This is Marker Number 34 on the Crown Point Road. Go to the web site http://www.crownpointroad.org for more information about this old Military Road built in 1759 and used during the Revolutionary War in 1776.

To find the letter box from the grave site, continue up the knoll back of the pile of stones about 25 paces straight back. You will see three large (about 15” diameter) trees all in a row and close to each other. The box is under some leaves and sticks on the upper side of a very small tree.

Please be sure to hide the box well when you leave.
