Shirt on a Line

THIS BOX IS MISSING SINCE Tropical Storm IRENE

I've changed the name of this letterbox because I realized the stamp says "a Line" not "the Line."

This letter box is planted near the location of the old Claghorn farm in Weathersfield, now the flood area for the North Springfield flood control dam and lake. The Claghorn family farmed there and had several children while there. This was before people had clothes dryers and throwaway diapers, so Mrs. Claghorn had a large clothesline, I am sure, to hang the many diapers she had to wash.

There was also a covered bridge in this location across the Black River. Before the Claghorns, the Hansen family farmed there and there were Girl Scout happenings there, and we made Some-Mores in the “ball field” above and behind the house, where there is a housing development today.

Also there was a cemetery behind the barn called the Sherwin or Grout Cemetery. Because of the building of the North Springfield flood control dam, many households and the cemetery were bulldozed away, or moved. The cemetery was removed in the 1960s and a new burial ground was situated next to the Plain Cemetery on Plains Road in Weathersfield.

To get to the old Claghorn farm, go to the village of Perkinsville via Route 106, and turn onto Maple Street across from the pink house, and go all the way down. There are gates at several points which may be locked during the off winter season. If so, just park and walk.

Check your mileage gauge if you are driving as you pass the first gate on Maple street. Keep going down the road until you come to a “T” in the road. Take a RIGHT here and follow the road down a little hill and around a big curve and out onto the meadow. There is a marker and plaque on left that tells about the old Butterfield covered bridge. This curve is the location of the farm, the barn was on the left, and house on the right. Just beyond, on the left, below the road level is a stone wall surrounding a marker commemorating the old cemetery.

If any gate is locked, you can still park out of the way of the gate and walk down.

To find the Shirt on a Line, remember that in the spring, to control excess runoff from snow melt which may cause flooding in Massachusetts and Connecticut, this area may be under water, because they close the dam. So the letterbox is placed above the usual high water line.

About .9 miles from the first gate you come to a wye in the road with a curve to the left (main trail), a middle dirt road, and a trail up the hill (and more to the right, a valley). (Park and) walk up the hill and past the gate. Keep walking until you find on your left, a group of about 6 small tree trunks all together. Stand at this group tree your back to it and take about 22 paces into the woods. The letterbox is behind the base of a single tree on your right about 8" in diameter.

Be sure to hide the box well when you leave.
