Road to Big Rock Letter Box - Purple Coneflower
THIS BOX IS MISSING SINCE HURRICANE IRENE.
There used to be a place where teenagers went to swim on the Black River in Weathersfield called Big Rock. A large rock sloped down into the River on the east side and it made for good sunning yourself, or for just getting in gradually. It was located south of the Butterfield covered bridge, now gone.

When planting this letterbox I could not get close enough to the Black River in the North Springfield Lake and dam area to find that old rock. I am sure it is still there, but maybe the river doesn’t go by any more, as the flood control dam has changed a lot of the geography in that area.

To find the Road to Big Rock letter box, from Springfield, follow Route 106 north to Reservoir Road and go up Reservoir Road. After you pass the border sign from Springfield to Weathersfield you will see on the left, a sign “Nature Area, No. Springfield Lake.” Turn down here (open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.)

From Weathersfield, go south on 106 two miles from Downers and take a left onto Stoughton Pond Road. This road crosses the causeway at Stoughton Pond and if you stay straight on it, it becomes Reservoir Road. Keep going until you find the sign on the right that says “Nature Area, No. Springfield Lake,” and turn down that road

You will come to a wye and a sign “Old Reservoir Road”. Take the right. It is about .8 mile from the highway if you go all the way down to where the Butterfield covered bridge used to be. You can park here and walk back up the road, or turn around and drive back.

After you cross the brook, if you drove, park here and walk into the woods. There are wooden posts and signs indicating a “Green Trail” or “G-2”. Take a right at “G-2” the path follows the babbling brook. You will pass a bench on your left. At “G-3” keep right, you will pass an uprooted tree with stones in the roots, and an old stone wall.

Find on the right a sign indicating “Site of Barrett’s Mill circa 1840.” With your back to the Barrett’s sign look across the flat area to the hill and at about the 11 o'clock position, find a group of three trees, two about 10" in diameter and one smaller. Walk over to it and find the letter box in the leaves beneath those trees among some Christmas ferns. Careful of those ferns!

There are a couple of ValleyQuest boxes in this area alos, check at the entrance for clews.

Be sure to rehide well with sticks and leaves.
